Fredrik Sjostrom, a former first-round pick that played six seasons with four different NHL teams, has announced his retirement from pro hockey.

Sjostrom, 30, broke in with the Coyotes (who took him 11th overall in 2001) and spent three seasons in Phoenix, posting a career-high 23 points in 2005-06.

From there he played for the Rangers, Flames and finally the Maple Leafs, spending his final NHL campaign (2010-11) in Toronto.

He’s perhaps best known by Maple Leafs fans as one of the pieces acquired in the Dion Phaneuf trade (along with defenseman Keith Aulie, now in Tampa Bay).

Sjostrom spent the 2011-12 campaign with Farjestads of the Swedish Hockey League and last year with Frolunda, the club he represented at the junior and senior levels prior to getting drafted.
