Ex-NHL D-man Ryan O´Byrne signs with LEV

HC LEV Praha has made a change on defence, signing 29-year-old Canadian Ryan O´Byrne. At 196 cm and 106 kg (6´5", 234 lbs) and 385 PIM in 333 NHL games, it´s clear what the Lions are getting in this exchange. Meanwhile, Swedish blueliner Mathias Porseland has been traded to Admiral Vladivostok for a 5th round draft pick in 2014.

A native of Victoria, British Columbia, Ryan O´Byrne was drafted in 2003 by the Montreal Canadiens from the junior A-level BCHL but instead opted to play college hockey for Cornell University. He increased his offensive production from the back end each season there, helping the Big Red win a national championship in his second year and becoming an alternate captain on the squad in his third year. After his junior year, he turned professional in 2006 at age 22.

In his first pro season, he played the full season with the AHL´s Hamilton Bulldogs, recording 12 points (all assists) in 80 regular season games, then 7 points (2+5) in 22 playoff games as the Bulldogs won the Calder Cup as league champions.

O´Byrne split time between the NHL and the AHL over six seasons. His best season as a North American pro came in 2010-11, when he recorded 10 points in 67 games shared between Montreal and the Colorado Avalanche. He finished last season playing 8 regular season games and then 6 playoff contests with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

All told, O´Byrne recorded 39 points (5+34) and 385 penalty minutes in 333 NHL regular season and playoff games. He also spread 33 points over 140 AHL games and 11 points in a 16-game stint in the ECHL. During last season´s NHL lockout, he also worked for a time as an assistant coach with the Victoria Grizzlies, his old junior club.

WTF MG!? I'm actually kind of frustrated. Even if he didn't want to sign for league minimum we could've offered him a 900k-1M and proly got him (lord knows we have the cap space). He's an intimidating presence to have on the backend... I'm a fan of any man who can knock Chara off his feet. Now if Albert goes down with an injury, our only other Dman with a mean streak is 6'0 198lbs.

MG better be getting his defensive depth from somewhere then. Right now here's our depth:

Hamhuis

Garrison

Edler

Bieksa

Tanev

Alberts

Weber

Corrado

We've got 5 true NHL defencemen and a couple of part-time AHLers in Alberts and Weber. Corrado is a full-time AHLer who still counts as a rookie.

Right now, we're 2 injuries away from disaster, and considering Tortorella's shot-blocking style, along with our bad history of defencemen injuries, we'll have 3 at one point. MG really has to get at least 1 depth defenceman for the Canucks, and one for the farm considering how thin we are in young D-men. O'Byrne would have been a nice fit.

Now I just hope MG is going to use his 2M in cap space on Zanon or Hainsey, because that's all that's left really.
