Brodeur: Luongo should start for Team Canada

Recommended Posts

Martin Brodeur believes Roberto Luongo should be the goaltender to lead Team Canada at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

The four-time Olympian, and two-time gold medallist told New Jersey Devils beat writer Tom Gulitti that in addition to Luongo’s solid play, the Vancouver Canucks goalie’s relationship with the Canadian coaching staff and international experience is a factor.

Luongo replaced Brodeur during the Vancouver 2010 Games and was the starter when Canada defeated the United States in overtime to win gold.

“I think when you win the gold medal you deserve the chance to defend it until someone takes you down,” Brodeur said.

Brodeur, who has been a lock to make Team Canada in the past, is not expected to be named to the roster this time around. In 23 appearances with the Devils this season, the 41-year-old is 12-8-3 with a .907 save percentage and 2.25 goals-against average.

Although Luongo is expected to make the team, Canada’s goalie situation has been up in the air with the likes of Carey Price, Mike Smith, Corey Crawford, Josh Harding and Marc-Andre Fleury all in the mix.

Brodeur added that if it were up to him Canada’s three goalies would be Luongo, Price and Fleury.

Lol @ all the people who said Lu shouldn't start nor even make the Olympic roster...I find it extremely hysterical actually to be quite honest those who thought he wouldn't be the starter and moreso to those who said he won't make it

When arguably the GOAT goaltender says Lu's in, you should take his word.

Luuuuuuuuuu! :towel:

maybe he wants Canada to lose for benching him in Vancouver.

Just kidding but we should go with the best chance to win and leave the past in the past. If Lu is that best chance, then fine but nobody has a right to it. If that were the case the marty should never have been removed for Lu.

May the best goalie play and the best team be iced.
