Olympic team snub frustrates Jack Johnson

Article from the Columbus Dispatch

NEW YORK — The day after USA Hockey revealed its roster for next month’s Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards asked to meet with defenseman Jack Johnson, who was among the last cuts.

Richards, an assistant coach for Team USA, said he “wanted to see where Jack was at with the decision.”

But it’s clear, even a week later, that Johnson is not in a happy place, not only with being left off the team, but with the way Team USA handled the public relations surrounding its announcement.

Johnson, who has represented the United States 10 times in various levels of international play, insisted that his frustration and disappointment will not affect his performance with the Blue Jackets, or the way he plays under Richards.

But he clearly feels he wasn’t fully supported by his coach and others within USA Hockey.

“I read the article that said three coaches unanimously left me off,” Johnson said, referring to a report by ESPN.com’s Scott Burnside, who chronicled the behind-the-scenes machinations that led to the final roster, including some stinging criticisms of certain players and details of how coaches and management voted.

“It’s over now. … Anything that’s said now is empty and meaningless. When I needed the belief and trust, I didn’t get it, and I didn’t get it when it counted from numerous people.”

“The team’s picked. I sat there and watched it on TV along with everybody else. That’s how I heard. From TV.”

The ESPN article never states that Richards voted against Johnson being on the team, but it does say in more than one instance that the coaching staff, as a whole, favored other players after Johnson got off to a poor start this season. Anaheim’s Cam Fowler claimed the last spot on defense.

“Jack’s play wasn’t where it needed to be at the start of the year,” Richards said. “Now, with him at the top of his game, look where we’re at as a team, how well we’re playing. It’s a compliment to him and his game.”

In the Blue Jackets’ 5-10 start, Johnson had two goals, three assists and a minus-8 rating. In the 28 games since, Johnson has no goals, six assists and a minus-3 rating. The Blue Jackets are 14-10-4 in those games — a playoff pace in the Eastern Conference.

Maybe Johnson will use the snub as fuel for the rest of the season. It sure looks that way so far.

Johnson played a season-high 31 minutes, 35 seconds in the Blue Jackets’ 4-3 shootout win over the New York Rangers on Monday in Madison Square Garden. Richards called it one of his best games “in two-plus seasons for us.”

“Did I get off to a slow start? Yeah,” Johnson said. “But what pro athlete hasn’t had ups and downs in his career? It happens. It wasn’t due to a lack of effort, I can guarantee you that.

“The last month, leading up to the announcement, I know I was playing really well. I did my best and left it all out there.”

Considered a lock to make the roster in September, and expected to be a leader on the team, sitting home this February will be a bitter pill. There is a chance, however, that Johnson could be added to the roster if one or more of Team USA’s defensemen get injured before the NHL’s Olympic break.

“I’m not going to sit here and bank on injuries,” he said. “Quite frankly, I’m able now to solidify plans for February, and it’ll be nice to not have to worry about anybody watching you play, just go out and play your season. It’s something I’m just putting out of my mind. It’s over to me.”

Richards said it’s vitally important to him that Johnson knows he has his support.

“Look, I know what he means to this team, this organization,” Richards said. “I know what he’s done here. I got asked a lot over the summer about where this organization’s turnaround started, when we got it going in a different direction, and to me it all started the previous season (2011-12) when we got Jack in that trade (with Los Angeles for Jeff Carter), just the way he handled it. I know the importance he has on this team.”

Can't say that I blame him. Especially since Richards sounds like he's backpedaling

(Didn't see this posted anywhere)

I think Team USA might be regretting the decision to let Burnside sit in on the decision making process.

It makes it pretty tough for guys like Richards, Burke and Poile to dance around the fact that they were critical of certain players, when the report clearly shows that to be the case.

It's entirely possible that some of Team Canada's brass said that St Louis is "too old", or "too small", but we'll never know.

I dont know who this Faulk guy is, but there are much damn better defenders than him...

21 year old defender who is an assistant captain on the hurricanes. he was in the running for the calder in the 2011-12 season.

he also has 14 points (4G 10A) in 18 games for team USA in the world championships the past 2 years.

Faulk really is one of the best up and coming d men in the league.

To me it's the orpik Martin and McDonough decisions over jack that surprise.

McDonough is arguably the 2nd best US Dman, he plays in all situations and logs huge minutes in NY. MCDonough deserves to have made the US team. Also based on the ESPN article Orpik and Martin were locks to make the team although I agree they probably should not have been.

I have a Jon Snow one as well, but it's really big so I won't post it here.

OP, any chance if you're going to post a thread that you can actually make it readable?

Not sure that its all that necessary given the fact that I made sure the link was included in my post ;)
