Western backed coup attempt underway in Ukraine

"All those who support this coup should say clearly, 'Yes, we are for the overthrow of the legitimate authorities in Ukraine', and not hide behind peaceful protesters," Azarov said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

"A genuine attempt at a coup d'etat is being carried out," Russian news agency Interfax quoted him as saying.

The unrest has swollen in recent weeks, and turned violent on Sunday when hard-core radicals broke away from the main protest area in the capital Kiev and clashed violently with riot police.

Outside the capital, thousands stormed the regional administration headquarters in Rivne in western Ukraine on Thursday, breaking down doors and demanding the release of people detained in the unrest there, UNIAN news agency reported.

In the central Ukrainian town of Cherkasy, 200 km (125 miles) south of Kiev, about 1,000 protesters took over the first two floors of the main administration building and lit fires outside the building.

Local council urges Ukraine president to fend off 'coup attempt'

The regional legislature of Odesa has urged Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to take "immediate effective measures" to put an end to current violent mass riots that it claimed are a coup attempt.

Yanukovych enjoys "the confidence of the territorial communities of the region of Odesa," the Regional Council said in an appeal to the president.

The council states "its support for your actions to ensure public order, protect the rights of civilians, preserve our country and enlarge its power and prestige, and asks you to take immediate effective measures matching the character and scale of the threat to national interests," the appeal said.

The appeal was passed at a council session that was preceded by two rallies, one by supporters and one by adversaries of the Yanukovych government.

Well this is obviously western backed. How would western politicians react if lets say Putin went to Mexico to stir up hate towards USA? because this exactly what is going on. The EU/Allies want Ukraine to separate ties from Russia for political gain not for Ukraine prosperity. How long will western hypocrisy continue?

They even have the nerve to declare the democratically elected government as illegitimate just because they don't want to sign EU agreements, but what is even more disturbing is they are basically forcing the government to sign.

The majority of protesters don't represent the majority of Ukrainians. It is only the far west that is demanding these changes. This is especially true because even the region of Crimea that is seeking separate statehood believes the current Ukraine government as legitimate.

That's mostly correct, there's a real dicotomy in play here. It would make sense to let the western region seperate and join the EU and watch them sink. And not all big money players in the east are supporting Yanukovych either and as he doesn't have the political power to neuter these political influencers as does Putin his nuts are increasing feeling the turning of the vicegrips. For now though he needs to stand his ground.

Regardless of what you choose to believe there are people in danger over there for their beliefs. There are people standing up for what they want and believe in.

While we in Canada and the west get bent over and basically prison sexed by our governments with a smile.

If Canadians had a fraction of the stones that the Czechs the Brits, The Irish or...even the bloody french did maybe just maybe we'd have a government that worked for us, not themselves, their wallets and their largest coporate contributors

Any proof that the "West", or the USA specifically, is involved in this?

The "sources" in the OP's post just quote random Russian government officials. Russia is probably the least trustworthy party possible in this matter. Anyone remember the time they poisoned the Ukrainian opposition party candidate?

I figure that is fairly pertinent and in keeping with the story.

Well seeing how this all began because Ukraine refused to sign EU agreements is an obvious indication. I don't believe the USA is directly involved since this a EU issue but they are part of it indirectly, McCain and other USA government officials were parading around with cakes a few weeks ago.

Also the EU labels the government illegitimate yet they are still willing to work with them if they sign the agreements? Like I said in my previous post the EU doesn't care for the well being of Ukraine, instead they see this an opportunity for political gain. Why don't they wait till upcoming elections? or request a referendum? Just because a small far western region of Ukraine demands this change doesn't mean the whole country does.

Hey @warhappy & torterella the boss, stfu.

It is Warhippy lol and what did he do?
