After seeing tonight's Game of Thrones, it's pretty clear the Canucks need to take someone with size like The Mountain, as opposed to being quick and skilled like The Red Viper.

Could you imagine if the Canucks had someone who could crush a man's head with his bare hands?

That's what I thought. Ritchie and Virtanen are far closer to The Mountain than Ehlers/Nylander will ever be, in fact their dancing around only serves to delay the inevitable bone crushing hit to their heads.

RIP Nylander.

He was the smarter man. Don't want to spoil anything but he got the confession of the murder and rape of his sister. That was his goal as well as killing The Mountain and, ultimately, both those goals are achieved. In the world of Game of Thrones and the NHL, brain over brawn every damn time. This was but a moral victory.

Contract?

Rookie contracts are pretty much set standard, and then teams get RFA rights to leverage. Why would we be introducing contract into the conversation? It just sounds like smack talk.

Or do you have some quote saying Nylander, with an NHL dad, is gunna bolt to the KHL...?

In an ideal world, a top 5 draft pick should have;

- elite skill

- dominating performance against top competition on record

- significant physical attributes that set you apart from other players. Could be speed, size or explosive athleticism.

If fitness and strength are lacking, it would not be a surprise to see a guy drop several spots. Look at a picture of Horvat without a t shirt, then look at Shinkaruk. One's stock dropped at the draft despite items one and two! Lack of strength will limit your ability to explode out of scrums with the puck against bigger, better trained athletes.. The purpose of picking a player is to take on guaranteed attributes not take on risk.

Sounds like Nylander's athletic attributes on display at the combine put some doubts to rest? Probably even set himself apart!

I am basing this off of ALL of the rumours regarding his attitude or his familial involvement into his playing and training time.

I also speak of his big boy contract not his ELC

Just rumours CS no need to get uber defensive.

As you see by the cute little emote face there I was only partially serious and with the Hodgson issues still fresh in our minds if these rumours are/were true it is a worrisome point.

Damnit.. You guys got me wanting Nylander again

It's interesting to see some people start to come around.

Two months ago it was just FrosbergTheGreat and myself who thought this kid was our best option.

Attitude problems, doesn't work out, looks like a girl, plays on big ice, doesn't battle, riding his father's coattails....these are all seeming to fade when faced with the fact he has top line centre potential and intense desire to win.

Nylander doesnt play enough of a two way game. Its why we chucked hodgson.

And if he hasnt played a two way game in shl than lmfao at playing one in the nhl.

Pure offense that we do not need over depth instead of higgins and hansen on ur 2nd line.

That was for a 3rd line centre on a contending team.

That would not be the case with Nylander, and he can learn.

He certainly has the speed, skill, and conditioning to do it.

Offensively, are we expecting Backstrom? Because Backstrom was a much, much better prospect, offensively. Perhaps expecting Backstrom-level of offense is unreasonable.

And if we're not expecting Backstrom, then we should probably pass on Nylander, since he's a defensive non-factor with a seemingly Coho-esque mentality.

Backstrom would be a decent comparison. I lean more toward Brad Richards, myself. If we are expecting Backstrom then we should not pass on him?

Every prospect had potential deficiencies but it would be shortsighted to focus on those when they are learnable qualities IMO. Most NHL players have certain deficiencies too.

The attitude problems are more myth based than anything in my estimation.

I'm not saying that Nylander is the answer, but it's sure going to suck when the Sedin's retire and all we have is a surplus of 2nd line players and no one ready to step in.

I can't see Horvat being anything more than a reliable 2nd line center (maybe on the first with the right linemates, but he wouldn't drive the line), Jensen is looking like a 2nd liner at best, Shinkaruk just missed a year with injuries so his development is up in the air, and Gaunce will probably be lucky to not be stuck in a third line Malholtra type role.

Having depth is great, but our two superstars are on the back end of their career and we have no prospects with any real first line potential.

Although this probably isn't going to be the draft where we find one, unless we trade up. We're going to end up with a good prospect regardless, and hopefully one turns into a great prospect.

We understand that they have offensive talent, but their potential does not reach Nylander's or Ehlers' whatsoever.

Not even close.

Ehlers had 49 goals and 104 points in 63 games. Ritchie had 74 points in 61 games. Virtanen had 45 goals and 71 points in 71 games. Comparing apples and oranges in terms of skill.

OHL actually scored 6.9 goals per game while the QMJHL scored 6.8 so the OHL tended to score a little more.

And the galling thing of all is most experts say Nylander is more talented than Ehlers. I am certainly impressed by Nylanders combine. He is definitely in play at #5

Not to mention Nylander has had an extremely impressive Combine. After crushing all the Cardio components he banged out 11 pull-ups.........take that Sam Bennett.

Of the four most likely candidates Nylander has the lowest bust potential IMO.

Really comes down to an identity thing.

With the Sedins as the perfect mentors I can see Nylander thriving in Vancouver. Say he takes another 2 years to get to the NHL, then he learns from the Sedins for another 2 years and is ready for an lead offensive role when the Sedins leave ( his 5th year). He has the highest offensive potential of our options and we don't have that in our current prospect pool.

Absent-minded Canuck: I know you were disappointed the Canucks took Horvat over Nic Petan last year. I feel bad critiquing your opinion because you are probably a younger Canuck fan. But one thing you should know going forward is that looking just at points to measure NHL potential is a very poor way to assess prospects. There is a lot of context and perimeters that go into evaluating a prospect that's why there are actually scouts who watch games and not just a guy one draft day that sorts the prospects point totals.

Haha actually I've always been interested in him. Ritchie is still my top choice but Nylander is my second.

Couple months ago I was really into the kid because the scouts were saying some crazy stuff like " as a scout you want to pay for the ticket just up see him play". Tells me he could be a superstar and it very well could happen. Still on the Ritchie train but would be pumped if we took Nylander because that means the scouts weren't concerned about him busting at all.

I guess I haven't been harping on him as my pick enough to get noticed! B)

But I've always felt we go for the highest possible skill level we can get with this pick, and that's Nylander. Obviously if there are any concerns that really add to the risk then they'd have to be considered but I think the rumours about playing for different teams all year has been offset nicely by his combine performance.

There might be slightly less skill with what has been the consensus top 5 but lesser risk as well, so I'd still consider changing my mind if one of them drop, but I'm not as high on any of the other players outside that top 5 with our 6th overall.

Our prospect pool is missing a top end forward and a top end defenceman. What one are we best able to get in this draft? Consider that and the fact we aren't likely to draft as high again unless we continue to retool/rebuild.

These interviews are confidential. You won't find "ANY" interviews from anyone or any teams.

As well as being interviewed by the teams, the prospects are also interviewed by the media. This is what Tangerines was referring to - or did you miss all the links being posted on previous pages to the media scrums?

I've got to admit, the combine really changed my perception on Nylander. If we end up keeping the sixth pick I wouldn't mind picking Nylander. The kid has such soft hands and incredible vision, who else could mentor him other than his fellow Swedes in Henrik and Daniel Sedin?

Daniel-Henrik-Nylander

Edler-Cederholm

Lack

Markstrom

What a Swede line-up... :bigblush:

I think a lot of us were surprised with Nylander physical ability, but it really shouldn't be considering he's been playing against men in the SHL. I do believe he will go in the top 5 based on skill and physical conditioning. If he's available at six I would have no quarrels with us picking him, even though I know Schroeder was similarly strong in the combine, I think Nylanders height difference, and skill set are major advantages over JS.

Nylander or Dal Colle if we stay at 6, Reinhart or Bennett if we move up.

Nylander was my second pick due to the 'attitude problems' and lack of NA playing time. Well he has certainly sold me. He had a great combine.

Unfortunately, I dont believe he will be there at #6. I just PRAY its not Bennett who is the odd man out. Dal Colle or Draisaitl please.

We need high end skill more so then we do size and strength. Our only offensive prospects are Jensen and Shinkaruk, both of which were picked late in the 1st round in their respective drafts, so don't have extremely high expectations for them. We need speed and offensive creativity since we extremely lack those aspects on our team.

We were one of the worst offensive teams last year and our PP has been crap for years. We really need to address these issues.

In 2011 we were an offensive team and then the Bruins beat us. Gillis then strayed away from what made us successful and now look how far we have declined since then.

If we do not address these issues then we are in for hell when the Sedins retire. We would most likely have to develop NJD's style of hockey in which they played a dozen years ago since we won't be fast enough or offensively skilled enough to be an offensive force.

We should never try to be the Kings or the Bruins. We should have always tried to remain true to who we were. The Canucks, an uptempo, offensive and puck possession team that won with quick transition and by making teams pay on the PP.

That is the truth.
