Hey UN...stand up...bring in peacekeepers. That will stop Russia from moving in. Gets a ceasefire. Stabilize the situation and work out a solution to keep Ukraine independent. Maybe monitor for elections to make sure they're fair.

Escalation is going to lead to disaster.

There is nothing Obama can or will do besides blowing smoke. Because Russia has veto on UN Security notheing can be done there. As for breaking international law, the US does it all the time.

Exactly. Can't believe how hypocritical US government is. "It's only okay if we do it".

The UN can not do anything since Russia sits on the security council and will veto everything.

Since when can one country veto the rest of the council?

The UN went into Korea.

And Russia would have vetoed it if they could. They just happened to be boycotting the council at the time.

The entire point of the council is that one country can veto and stop anything.

So you're saying its like the quote from Yes, Prime Minister. It has the engine of a lawnmower and the brakes of a 747.

Also, re: the Russian military use thing, there seems to be a lot more people focussed on the hypocrisy of the US, rather than focus on just how messed up what may occur here will be.

This is some Cold War era Soviet crap right here.

The UN in general, sure. The whole security council thing often turns the institution into a gong show.

I mean it's not entirely useless, but there's so much red tape to cut through before you can get stuff done that often it never gets done altogether.

Ukrainian Navy flagship takes Russia’s side – report

Ukraine’s Navy flagship, the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate, has reportedly refused to follow orders from Kiev, and come over to Russia’s side and is returning home after taking part in NATO operation in the Gulf of Aden flying the Russian naval flag.

There has been conflicting information on where exactly the vessel is, but a Russian senator has confirmed to Izvestia daily that the frigate defected to the Russian side.

Ukraine’s Navy flagship the Hetman Sahaidachny has come over to our side today. It has hung out the St Andrew’s flag,” Senator Igor Morozov, a member of the committee on the international affairs, told Izvestia daily.

He said the flagship is on its way back to the Black Sea after drills in the Mediterranean. “The crew has fulfilled the order by the chief commander of Ukraine’s armed forces Viktor Yanukovich,” he added.

The move comes after the Navy command resigned Friday. Self-appointed President Aleksandr Turchinov made Rear Admiral Denis Berezovsky the new Navy Chief, a statement published on the President’s website Saturday said.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Prime Minister of Ukraine had earlier asked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan not to let the frigate through the Bosporus strait, according to the Kiev Times. The ship captain and the head of Ukraine’s contingent in the operation, Rear Admiral Andrey Tarasov disobeyed orders from Kiev.

The Hetman Sahaidachny returns to Sevastopol, Crimea after taking part in a joint counter-piracy operation with NATO and the EU off the Horn of Africa, reported UNN on Friday, citing Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. On February 26, after crossing the Suez Canal, the ship entered the Mediterranean Sea and was expected to be in Sevastopol in early March.

The flagship of the Ukrainian Navy has just defected to the Russian side. This does not look good for Ukraine.

+ both own nuclear weapons if i´m correct

not that they will use them ....but its allways a thing to worry about

Ukraine HAD aprox 1900 nuclear weapons in its possession at the end of the cold war when the country became independent. More than most nuclear powers. Throughout the 1990s they sent all of these weapons back to Russia to be dismantled. They signed the nuclear non proliferation agreement as a newly non nuclear nation. So short answer: Ukraine has no nuclear weapons.

Russia wouldn't care what Obama said. the United States can no longer afford to go into another war, i'm not even sure what they can really do, if Russia decides to use milatery to "over take" Ukrane. Theirs absolutley nothing they can do. Geographically it's extremely difficult if USA wants to play a hero and try to save Ukrane, Meanwhile Russia's is just next door, USA has no chance. It's not like world war 2.

Elections won't really change anything. 50% of the population are pro-EU and the other 50% are pro-Russia.

Peacekeeping only works when it's to create a buffer between 2 separate nations. They rarely works well when it's an internal conflict.
