If we don't re-sign him I will be very concerned about next season, no way I would just hand it over to Demko. They would have to bring in another top notch goalie, if available, and then what would that cost, better to just write the cheque.

Questionable if another goalie of Marky’s quality will even hit the open market, be willing to play in a Canadian city, and be affordable under our cap situation.

This is hyperbole and nothing more.

There is ZERO news regarding your bolded statement.

There was actual talk however, that the Canucks wanted to sign Marky for a shorter term deal but he wanted longer.  Nothing to panic about....unless you want to go to the coronaivirus thread --> tons to panic about there!!

Even if your panicky statement was correct, if Marky did get 6 million per year, that would make him one of the NHL's highest paid goalies:

Marky will get more than John Gibson.  If the number was $5 to $6 million Benning would have signed him already.  The real number today is $7 million.  If we miss the playoffs then that number will rise even higher.  But given Marky's character and love for the City I can see him taking a hometown discount.  So $7 million might do it.  That would put him in the top 6 goalies in the league where he belongs...

I think it has to do with a NMC for the expansion draft. If Demko doesn't play and get us into the playoffs then I think that is a pretty moot point.

Yes I don't think that NMC would be an issue anymore.  Marky has zero chance of being left unprotected.

It would be difficult to envision Markstrom going to a bottom-feeder just to get PAID when he of all people would know what this team has been building towards and what we could be capable of in the next couple years (I said could, so everyone calm down, ok).

That said, we've all seen guys leave winning/championship programs just so they can get PAID, so in that regard, it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

I think he gets 6 to 6.5 mill per.

I also believe if JB gives him like 6 years he goes as low as 6. But that is just me...

I tend to agree with that estimate but would define it a bit more: 6 yrs @ 6 mil or 5 yrs @ 7 mil. My thinking is that they may not want to go beyond age 35 on his contract and if he is still performing well at the end of his contract they can opt to sign him a year or two at a time.

My ideal scenario for the Canucks and their goaltending is:

- Markstrom the goalie for now signs contract for $7M/yr for 5 years, front-loaded ($8.5M in year 1+2, followed by 7/6/5) with full no-trade protection for first 4 years and a modified NTC for the final year

- Demko stays as back-up, then offered to Seattle in expansion

- DiPietro the goalie of the future, refining and honing is game under the coaching of Ian Clarke and mentorship of Markstrom

You could be right.  Nobody knows what will happen July 1. If somebody gives him crazy money then all bets are off.

Agreed. But there are very few real life examples of teams paying big big money for UFA goalies.

The last one, Bobrov, got paid and sucks.  GMs may be very wary about doing that again.  Again Marky does not have Bobs history to get anywhere near that money imo.

This is pretty easy to narrow down IMO. How many playoff teams need a goalie this summer? How many have enough cap to pay him DECIDEDLY more than the  $6+ Vancouver is likely to end up offering him?

I highly doubt Marky leaves the team that stuck with him, his friends and team mates on a rising team and one of the top goalie coaches who helped him get to the Vezina candidate season he was having, over a few hundred k and/or to a non playoff team.

That would be awesome but I think Marky values security/term above all.

He might ask for 6 years 4-5 would be awesome though.

He'll ask for six, Canucks are asking for two. They land in the middle at 4 +/- IMO.

Marky can go to another team and get 6 x 6 for sure.  We sign him, and that’s no Tanev and Tofu.  We can only afford one of the three.

actually it looks like we're going to have at least 20.5 mil in cap now since its going up, and thats before buyouts and trades. I think we'll be fine.

The league announces around this time every year that the cap is going up by huge numbers.  Then it doesn’t, so the players use their escalator clause to falsely increase it.  The players said they’re not doing that anymore.  In fact they want escrow (15-20%) to disappear.  That means the cap will have to go up naturally.

It’s either Marky, Tanev OR Tofu.  If we want two of the three, then JB will need to use more picks/prospects as sweetener to dump a couple bad contracts.  It’s a real bad situation.  Real bad.  It’s akin to being gut shot in an old Spaghetti Western.  Or wearing a red shirt on an away mission in Star Trek.
