Armada
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbGzBZeNues "Help us — our mom is trying to kill us!" a young child screamed as a pregnant woman drove her minivan — with three young kids children inside — into the ocean in Florida, a trucker who waded into the frigid Atlantic waters to rescue them said Wednesday. Tim Tesseneer, a truck driver and former volunteer firefighter visiting from North Carolina, was one of the first men to reach the van Tuesday in the heavy surf. He and other passersby dived in to pull the children — two girls and a boy, ages 3, 9 and 10 — to safety through a window and a hatchback. The children, who weren't badly hurt, were treated at a hospital and were in state custody, Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said Wednesday. The driver, identified as Ebony Wilkerson, 32, of Cross. S.C., was undergoing a mental evaluation Wednesday, and no charges had been filed. "We thought it was so brave of them to put themselves in danger to help someone else in such an emergency," said a witness, Taylor Quintin, who was in town from Vermont on vacation. Tesseneer said he initially spotted the minivan as it drove across the dunes of Daytona Beach. At first, Tesseneer, who lives in Rutherfordton, N.C., thought the driver was on a joyride. It looked like they were "just having fun — 'hey, look at us, we're breaking the law,' whatever," he said. "Then we got to hearing kids sort of screaming, and I swear I heard I heard one of them say, 'Help!'" Tesseneer and a second passerby managed to talk briefly to Wilkerson, who had one of the children sitting in her lap. With a "blank, scary look" on her face, she told the men: 'We're OK. We're going to be fine,'" Tesseneer said. And then she turned left and drove straight into the water. "All I could think about was Susan Smith," Tesseneer said — referring to another South Carolina woman who was convicted of murder after she confessed to rolling her car into a lake with her two young children inside it in 1994. What happened next was captured on video by a Canadian tourist Rest of the article: http://www.nbcnews.c...n-rescue-n44731 Glad there are hero's like Tim Tesseneer in our world and hopefully the mom gets the children taken away. Clearly she's not fit to be a parent

drummer4now
Really? Well seeing how she is pregnant, and often times many women are under a lot of stress when they are pregnant. This could be a potential reason to her mental illness. I doubt she would just kill her children being sane.

-DLC-
Wow, that's tough to watch...and those poor kids'll be scarred by this for some time. The person they should be able to trust beyond any other. Wonder what went down...if she was on something or just mentally ill. Truly sad...as a mother, I can't imagine losing my bearings to the extent that I'd endanger my kids...obviously she was completely off. And you're right sam...a Dad would be slammed to the ground in handcuffs and thrown in a cell with little sympathy. But there's something clearly wrong here...if it's drugs, throw the bloody book at her and put those kids some place safe. If it's mental illness, hopefully she gets the help she needs. D-Money
A guy I know has a wife that suffered from some depression already, but postpartum from their 2nd kid kicked it into high level bipolar. But still a really nice family, with great kids, etc. He moved the whole family to the East coast to be near her parents, so she would have 24/7 support. He said that although his wife would normally NEVER even THINK of harming her children, he could not be absolutely 110% sure that what she became at her worst moment would not. Better safe than sorry. When I hear stories like this, I can only feel bad for everyone involved - including the mother. Where was her family? Weren't there warning signs? At least now she'll hopefully get the help she needs, and the kids will be safe.
Neversummer
99% of the time, when you hear stories like this, it is caused by postpartum depression. As someone already said, under normal circumstances, a woman would never think of harming her children. Should solicit our compassion and understanding because it is tragic ... not our judgement and condemnation.

Well said Deb. Moms are supposed to be the voice of reason and the ones that protect their kids no matter what. And like you said, if the state she was in was self-imposed i.e. she was a drug user, she should have the book thrown at her. Nearly getting her kids killed because she was under the influence is just an awful thought. And if she has mental issues, she needs to get proper help. Either way, the kids should be nowhere near that woman for a long time to come. Poor kids, that's scarring for life. I read in another news report about this incident that the woman was doing this to flee domestic violence. Not sure if that's true or not. While I sympathize, there are better ways of deal with that. Support groups? Shelters? Props to the good samaritans who stepped in and helped out.

This could be a potential reason to her mental illness. I doubt she would just kill her children being sane. Well put, and correct. I wonder how far she thought she'd get driving the car into the ocean. Would have succeeded more (if not an idiot) driving it into a lake/pond. Anyways, someone that goes that far is susceptible to snapping, but usually there's a history of that type of behaviour people, for some reason, just ignore. Mr. Ambien
I'll save my compassion for people who don't try to murder innocent children. That's fine, you may be without compassion, but consider the usefulness of studying people with the type of mental illness that drives them to do this and how it saves lives, especially concerning hormones, or traumatic child birth (i.e. emergency caesarian), and the dramatically increased susceptibility of disconnect between mother and baby leading to potentially dangerous behaviour. Learning from stuff like this seems a bit more useful than just regurgitating platitudes.
