Can the Sedins respectfully pull a Kovalchuk after next year ?

Recommended Posts

I was just thinking, the Sedins are class acts. If they are really regressing , and after next year, they are aware that they are hurting the franchise, could they pull a Kovalchuk and head for Sweden and play Modo ?

All they would have to do is retire from the NHL and relinquish their contracts.

And as we seen just today, the penalties for the move will be reduced in the future..

Thoughts ?

My thoughts? Sedins are swedish...not russian. They are franchise players...kovalchuk was in NJ for under 3 years?? Thats my thoughts. They are exceptional players and exceptional players at their age will have an off year or so. Look who they have to play with. Go get some.

There's no cap punishment if the Sedins retire. Their contracts were cap compliant from the get-go.

No

Sorry but if anyone pulled what Kovalchuk did regardless of their contribution to a team/franchise/community it wouldn't be respectful plain and simple. Doesn't matter who the person(s) are. Just my opinion.

The ethnicity of the said players has nothing to do with it. My point is, the Sedins would do it for the good of the franchise if they feel that they are hurting it.

And I said after next year. So they would save the Canucks 14 million in cap space for 2 years and they would be able to play a couple years in Modo like they've always wanted to.

I love the Sedins and I think their deals are fair. But this regression is scary.

Did Daniel Alfredson ever have a bad year like this ? I was hoping all along that their iltelligent game would not regress with age. Similar to Alfies...

i love these guys so much ... i pray they have a big bounce back next year ... noone deserves it more ..

Agree 100%

And I cant stand it when people say that Gillis gave the Sedins and Burrows goodwill deals for past performace. This is malarky. MG paid what it would take to keep them and not a dollar more. Just think, if they hit the FA market.

What if the Sedins really are regressing a lot worse then people anticipated ? And they were just dead weight and 14 million in dead cap space for the last 1 or 2 years on their deals ? They would be doing the franchise a favour by pulling a Kovy

I would rather they respectfully attempt their best while their contracts remain than to walk away like that. It would instantly (i would assume) remove them from any retirement/ring of honor/HHoF talks if it were to happen.

Sorry, just my opinion but I don't have a lot of respect for people who just give up because the going gets tough (here's lookin at you Nucks fans)

Who said this is giving up ?

This is just a possible scenario we should explore if the Sedins struggles continue next year.

We know they want to play in Modo

We know they will try to cooperate with the interests of the team

What the hell are you talking about? There are no potential penalties involved in the Sedins' contracts like there were with Kovy's. Also, if the Sedins retire, it's because they want to play a few final years in Sweden and then stop playing pro hockey. Maybe they don't even do that, and just stop altogether.

If they aren't playing at a level they're happy with, of course they'll retire. It's not like they'll just ride out their contracts putting up 15-20 points a year (not that things would get that bad).
