(Proposal) Draft/offseason really long read

Recommended Posts

First I would buy out Garrison. I just doesn't look like this signing is going to pan out. He can't hit the net with his shot. It would put a negative look on the team for buying out a hometown boy but if there's a new gm he can just blame the old one. If not at least the team gave him a big payday.

Trade Booth to whoever for a 4th rounder to replace the one traded this year. With only one year left on his deal a team trying to reach the cap floor could take a stab at him.

Trade Hansen at the draft before his NTC kicks in. I think we could get a 2nd or a 3rd for him either in this or next years draft.

Sign Stastny to 5 yr 6mil per. He can play on Kesler wing, hopefully his set up man.

Trade for Weber. Don't know what it would take but something like Tanev, (to replace him on the right), Schroeder (former 1st still young decent prospect), a 2015 1st, 2016 2nd and the 2nd rounder from the Hansen trade. Don't know if that's enough but I think it's a start. Nashville frees up cash to sign offensive players and there D still looks solid. They work with an internal cap so freeing up 14mil owed to Weber next season gives them flexibility.

Sign Jagr or Gaborik (if Torts is gone) 1 yr 4mil. Preferably Jagr, I know everyone wants to get younger but what better guy to learn from and help the younger guys, could do wonders for Kassian, hell even the vets could learn from this guy. A leader in the room, has size, skill and can play the puck possession game.

Sign JS Gigure 1yr 2mil. It seems Colorado will let him go. He's a good veteran back up for Lack

Resign Kassian 2/3 yr 2-2.5 per

Resign Yanick Weber 1/2 yr 750-800 per

Resign Santorelli 1yr 1mil or 2yr 750 per

Resign Archibald for 1/2 yr ??

We keep this years picks as we are most likely picking high and stock up the prospect pool.

Lineup

Twins-Burrows/Jagr/Kassian

Stastny-Kesler-Burrows/Jagr/Kassian

Higgins-Matthias-Kassian/Burrows/Jensen

Sestito-Richardson-Jensen

Archibald-Santorelli

Forward group has a lot of different options and looks.

Elder-Weber

Hamhuis-Bieksa

Stanton-Corrado

Weber

Weber takes charge of the D, helps Edler gain his form back, takes pressure off Hamhuis being the shut down guy. Hamhuis playing better in turn helps Bieksa. I think a guy like Weber in his prime is worth the picks/prospects given up. Flipping a free Tanev, Schroeder doesn't seem he'll fit here, and a couple of picks for one of the best Dman in the game is something I would be okay with.

Lack

Gigure

Lack grows into the starting role but has a good back up to come in rough patches.

I'm one that doesn't want to rush our prospects just because of one messed up season. If we panic and ruin these guys we could have many more terrible seasons. Let the guys get at least a year in the AHL, see what it's like and how they respond playing against grow men. Unless of course someone blows the coaches away in camp. The following year there should be more spots and opportunity for the rookies to break in.

Jagr, Richardson, Sestito, will be UFAs. Trade Higgins for a 2/3 rounder.

Twins-Kassian

Stastny-Kesler-Jensen

Shinkaruk-Horvat-Burrows

Sestito-Mathias-Archibald

Lain-Santorelli

D the same

Lack

Markstrom

Hope you enjoyed the read, Cheers.

I would love to get Weber but I doubt Nashville accepts that offer. Poile said that they aren't trading Weber. We'd probably have to offer something like:

Kesler + Top Prospect (Horvat, Gaunce, Jensen, Shinkaruk, Tanev or Corrado) + 1st Round Pick to get Poile to not hang up on us.

A well laid-out proposal, and an enjoyable read. My thoughts:

- Garrison isn't playing well, but he can do so, and his contract for 40+ points a season is pretty good. He needs a stable partner and a PP that works. I like the guy, we should do whatever we can to get him firing again.

- I would compliance buyout Booth's backside. I'd be surprised if we could get anything for him other than 'future considerations'.

- As much as I love Beaker, I do agree with trading him. Some of this under-performing core needs to be sent packing, and Hansen is one of the guys I would trade. I'd be surprised if we got a 2nd for him, but maybe a 2014 3rd and a 2015 3rd?

- On this UFA market, with the massively increased cap, Paul Stastny is going to command $7m+. We would probably need to offer $8m to have a chance of signing him. Which I would happily pay.

- That Weber trade gets you a signed Weber jersey. If you want him, you need to offer Kesler + Tanev + two 1sts + a top prospect, likely Shinkaruk. No thank you.

- Jagr would not sign up for our travel schedule at his age, plus I doubt he'd thrive in the much more physical West. Gaborik would be great if he could manage 82 games, but you're lucky to get 42 from him now. I'd pass.

- I'm all for signing a proven veteran goalie, but Giguere is almost certainly retiring. I'd look at Halak maybe.

- Kassian does not get that much, nor does Santorelli get that little. Both sign for somewhere between $1.5m and $2m.

I would do the following:

Moulson-Stastny-Kassian

Daniel-Henrik-Burrows
Higgins-Matthias-Santorelli
Sestito-Richardson-Cracknell
Dalpe

Hamhuis-Bieksa

Garrison-Edler

Stanton-Tanev

Corrado-Weber

Halak-Lack

Signings:

Moulson 5 years @ $5m per (although I think he re-signs in Minny)

Stastny 5 years @ $8m per

Kassian + Santorelli 2 years @ $1.75m per

Cracknell 3 years @$750k per

Dalpe 1 year @ $650k

Tanev 2 years @ $2.5m per

Weber 1 year @ $750k

Halak 2 years @ $2.5m per

Trades:

Hansen > Dallas for two 3rd rounders (don't care which years)

Kesler > Pittsburgh for Pouliot + Bennett + 1st in 2015

This allows Horvat and Shinkaruk more time to develop too.

In reality, all MG will do is re-sign our existing players and maybe add a 4th liner in free agency. We can but dream though :)

If the Predators wanted to trade Weber, the return would include one exceptionally young established high end player.

Think Seguin for example. Or if it's a prospect, think Druoin.

You've offered Tanev, and while he's progressed nicely into a reliable d-man, he lacks the type of projection required for this type of deal.

I stopped reading at Weber. We can't get him. PERIOD. No team can.

I stopped reading at Garrison. He has 32 points this year (7 goals, 25 assists, 26th in the league for D and 5th on the team) and 103 blocks (5th on team). Karlsson, Yandle, Byfuglien, Weber, Doughty, Pietrangelo and Voyanov all have more missed shots this year than Garrison (most of which have more giveaways as well). Keith, Green, OEL, Subban and Chara are right behind him (again, most with more giveaways - even Chara).

Maybe you all would be happy with even less goals than we have now, but I'm not. And for a buyout no less...
