Playoffs over tanking for a draft pick

I much rather this team make the playoffs then tank for the higher draft pick. I see everyone saying go for the higher pick, but when your 4 points out of a playoff spot you go for it. The feeling fans get on spring days and your team is fighting in the playoffs to win is great! Yeah we may be kicked out 1st round but at least we can say we had a chance by making it. And really who knows? Daniel, Kesler come back and we could be a surprise team (unlikely) but possible. Draft picks are nice but nothing replaces the feeling of being in the playoffs. Only 4 points out! Let's do this boys! :towel:

The longer we drag this out, the closer we are to becoming Calgary. The Kesler injury is a huge blow to our already pathetic offense. Put a fork in us, we're done.

Honestly speaking though, there is more of a legit chance to make it than some people believe. Dallas has been absolutely hot in their last 10-12 games, chances they keep up that pace are pretty low, add on to the fact their number one goaltender is out. The Canucks couldn't buy a break for the past what? 20 games? The tide eventually switches direction, we are not as bad of a team as we have been the last 2-3 months.

I admit, chances are not high, their low, but as a fan, the way I see it, were not far off if we get on a bit of a roll.

It would be awesome if we can somehow draft in the top 4 or 5... But at the same time, one thing I realized when I was watching the Jets game is that I can't be watching the games hoping the team to lose. Only way for me to tolerate losing/tanking is if I do not watch the games. Now, for those of you that are for tanking, I have to accuse you of not being a true fan of the team. A true fan will naturally want to watch the games and if you are a true fan watching the games, you want them to win. A meaningless win makes your mood much better than losing.

Basically, intentionally tanking is unacceptable to me. So I agree that we should try our best to make the playoffs. You need not worry, the players aren't thinking about tanking for draft picks, they are playing to win and the coaches are coaching to win. The management cannot do anything at this point anyways so no one is intentionally setting the team to lose.

Great post, couldn't have said it better myself... I hate all the talk of intentionally losing games. Even Calgary and Edmonton are trying their hardest night in and night out to win their games.. And so should the Canucks

The fans that are hoping to tank(like myself) aren't short sighted and are thinking of the big picture. The rebuild is inevitable and although I do agree with you it's hard to cheer for them to lose, I'm still doing it because it's what is necessary to become relevant again in this league. You have to be delusional if you think this team has any sort of shot to make it out of the first round. This core is spent , time to move on and rejuvenate this team with young top end talent.

So do you watch the games or no?

Because I was unsure of how I should feel about this whole tanking thing until recently. I've been super busy so I only managed to get back to watching the games starting from the Islanders game. Man that left such a bad taste in my mouth. But as you probably did so yourself, I told myself, maybe it's a good thing we lose... but then we played the Jets.. when Burrows scored that game tying goal and Higgins scored the shootout winner, man that felt so good. My mood has been high for the last two days thanks to this win. Win against the Caps tonight will make me feel even better.

I agree that this rebuild will go way faster if we can pick McDavid or Reinhart/Ekblad in the next two years draft. But hoping for the team to suck just doesn't make sense from the fan's perspectives. I'm guessing you don't watch the games, otherwise, you end up disappointed either way. If we win, you are upset. If we lose, then obviously no fan is going to be happy.

Playoffs or no, and swept or not, as a fan if I'm watching the games, I'm going to be cheering for the team to win just as I did few years ago when they were doing well and just like the late 90's when they sucked bad.

I agree playoffs or nothing. I don't get why tanking in a weak draft this year is helpful. Also the chances of getting Mcdavid is almost zero to none. Too many ntc's and this team is too good to be a buffalo or a new york.

We won't become calgary because we don't have a veteran goalie or and relatively old group of forwards. We have Kassian, Tanev, Jensen, Schroeder, Mathias, Stanton....That's more young guys than Calagry or Edmonton ever had. We also have a number prospects on the cusp of making the big leagues. It's really really hard to duplicate what calgary did.

Playoffs baby lets goo!

And if the players aren't showing up regardless?

then they won't be on the team next year. In a situation where a team misses the playoffs, players play for contracts. Watch a little closer and you will see the players are trying on all teams, and the guys who are floating on teams like Edmonton and Buffalo will be gone (that's why most think guys like Yakupov will be on the way out of the Edmonton system

Basically I'm absolutely pro Playoff spot.. but what's gonna happened in the the last 3 month is absolutely horrible. I have (like everybody of us) so much fun to look Playoff hockey, but two consecutive sweeps in the 1st round, wasn't funny.

If we don't make the playoffs, what make some guys of you be thinking positive, that we will draft within Top 10? I guess everbody knows, that these Draft isn't really deep.. we need a re-tool, yeah, but we have guys like Hunter, Bo, Jensen, BigZ, Tanev or Corrado. Maybe some of these young guns make a team spot next year, maybe some of them not. But will be a player like Draisaitl, Ekblad, Reinhart (would like to see him at Canucks jersey), Perlini or Virtanen (or him) NHL ready in the next two seasons? Speculation is good, but a lot of speculation could kill us.

Playoff spot, No SC = picking over 15 = lose situation

Non-PO spot, no Top10 pick = lose situation

I guess we are in a lose-lose situation :sadno:

The odds of us picking top 5 are as low as us making playoffs. So please tell me, has the 16th overall picked player in the draft ever turned out to be better than the 6th overall picked. How often has the 7th overall picked player become the 7th best player to come out of the draft year?

The kids are 18 years of age and all playing in different leagues, with different levels of competition and at different level of physical development. To pick the exact order what each kid is going to achieve and amount to in 4-10 years it’s not going to happen. Especially within the range of 5-20 of the world’s top 800 kids. Picking 7th does not guarantee this team more success than picking 17th . Our scouting might have a player rated 7th overall and he might fall to 17th or get picked earlier. Benn and Bergeron being both picked in the 2nd round is an example of how accurate drafting is.

And if that’s the case, I’ll take cheering a team on, even if it is just for four games, over mailing it in at the end of the season and missing playoffs.
