What do we need to improve our team?

Recommended Posts

Do we need to fire our GM and coach or have to sign better players to improve our team performance? Do we need John's system in Vancouver? Does coach AV system work better or John's? I just don't believe how the skills team need to be so defensive. Blocking shot without scoring goals equal to lost. This kind of system doesn't work with the Canucks. We are skilled and good passing team, players need more freedom on offence.

In order to have "freedom" on offense and to not have to block shots you need to have puck possession - something the Canucks do sometimes...but when they do, they usually fail to get a shot as they just "dance" around the boards all the time...

I think removing Gillis would be a good starting point towards this team's improvement. Let his replacement try and undo some of the damage that's been done, and let him decide what to do with Tortorella and his staff.

Another thing I believe would be an improvement would be to let the team try to play more of an offensive game. If we lose games then most likely they'd be more entertaining. We're losing games right now anyway playing defensively and aside from the last couple they've been boring as hell, virtually unwatchable. This has to change.

1. Have you watched the Canucks lately? We're not that skilled.

2. Shot-blocking is fine. All teams do it to a degree. It's the flopping all over the ice in desperation that's laughable. That comes from lack of positioning in the first place, not shot-blocking. As well, other teams wear more protection if they are to block a lot of shots. NYR did. Not sure why we're not.

3. If AV was still here, you'd complain about him and his system. That's just the nature of coaching an underskilled team.

4. The solution to playing better hockey is simple enough: Get better hockey players. But acting on that is not so simple. There are no saviours to be signed, nor traded for. The only real solution lies through drafting and development. It's a process. I certainly hope the Canucks' plan is to acquire franchise-level talent through the draft soon. It's staring them in the face through that tremendous 2015 draft class.

I feel like you're trying to sell me a high school newspaper subscription.

We aren't a skilled and good passing team anymore. We're a team doing a mini rebuild. Had we not gone to the finals it might have started a year sooner. What this team needs is to do what it's doing . Build with youth. It doesn't have to just be through the draft. There are parts here that can help move things along a little quicker. If they really tank next year as well it's going to be a big help. I have a feeling this won't happen. I get the feeling this little rebuild is going to be faster than we expect it's going to be. The butt load of cap space we'll have next season (nearly 15 million if they buyout booth) with only Tanev, Kassian Schroeder and Santo to re-sign could if used right draw in some younger guys with skill.

quite a bit, starting with 1 or 2 young impactful players (Jensen, Horvat, Shinkaruk, Player from this draft), top 6 winger, and an improvement on the 4th line. Also need a lot of luck with all these injuries screwin us.

Honestly: Cohesiveness. Unity. Energy. Speed. Effort, every minute of every game. Focus. Probably some new blood to infuse some of this, but I'm not ready to give up on these guys either. Been a rough go...injuries ARE a factor and people are too quick to dismiss them. To expect that the recovery period is non existent and that players come back to 100% form immediately. Timing's off, guys have been tentative.

We'll see...I think we've been through this before and everyone has different ideas. None are guaranteed.

The definition of insanity...

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

A chuckle for the maracas.

We need better quality in our top 4 D

We need our top line firing a goal a game. I miss the west coast express !

I think its been said on here already " Stay the course " bring in talent through drafting solid players. I actually gotta give Gillis credit for Utica. Was a damn fine Idea and about 20 years behind schedule.

Could use a better GM, but heck who couldn't except maybe Chicago.

Could use a better coach but unless were replacing him with Quenville I would leave torts where he is. He has a knack for bringing along young guys, and that's exactly what we need right now.

It takes time for guys to figure it out including Coaches of new teams and Rookie GM's although I would fire Gillis just based on him screwing Lu like he did not to mention Scneids in the process too !

All the free agents in the world are not gonna fix our problems.

In 2010-11 we had Erhoff, Salo, Hamuis, Bieksa, Edler, Rome, Alberts and Tanev was coming along. Offence comes from defence first. With these guys every shift had a one pass outlet capable D man. Now, we have only one maybe two capable of doing that on a regular basis. Garrison has a BOMB but I really haven't seen much of it, and past that there is not much more with him from what I see. Probably has more to do with him being a forward in minor hockey.

So ya I don't think our current D corp is gonna get us back to game 7

I do like our prospects coming up. Give it time and leave torts to do his job with an UPGRADE in GMing, im stressing upgrade ! We should be looking good.

Always liked how burke could pull a rabbit out of a hat for a trade.

I think Francesco should buck up and straight out go and buy Bowman and Quenville. LOL well I guess I can always dream. sigh now I'm depressed

Oh ya. was wondering about the shot blocking ?

Everyone remembers the 94 run right ? well they bought in to shot blocking and did lots of it in that run. which was 20 years ago

Although the technique wasn't to stand in front of the puck and wait for your ankle to get broken. It was always a sliding play, seems much safer to me.

Just not sure what the mentality is behind trying to get your ankle broken ?
