Christian Folin atop college unrestricted free agent list: 6' 4" 214 lbs., right hand shot

The UMass Lowell River Hawks are still in the heat of the Hockey East playoffs and are almost certainly a lock for the national tournament, so their season is far from over. However, many National Hockey League teams are counting down the days until they can put in their offer on a certain sophomore defenseman from the River Hawks.

Entering this offseason, Christian Folin is the consensus top college unrestricted free agent and will be highly sought-after by many NHL teams to try and bolster their defensive core.

“He’ll have 15 NHL offers on the table as soon as his NCAA season ends,” said one NHL executive to Mike McMahon of College Hockey News. “We’ll be one of them.”

This is the second consecutive season in which Folin has been wanted by NHL teams. Following the River Hawks departure from the 2013 Frozen Four, Folin was contacted by a few NHL teams including the Vancouver Canucks. The Ottawa Senators were rumored to be in on the defenseman, but confirmed sources state the team wasn’t in contact with the UFA.

Folin has five goals and 11 assists for 16 points so far this season for the River Hawks in 37 games, including two game-winning goals and two game-winning assists. Over his career, Folin has 37 points (11g, 26a) in 75 games.

Can never be too stacked on D! also it allows for some flexibility come draft day. If the Canucks sign a bunch of free college prospects then our draft picks aren't so valuable and can make for some nice trade options.

Let's hope the Swedish presence - Sedins, Edler, Lack, Markstrom, Eriksson - will make it more inviting for him to sign here.

A big booming right handed shot could sure complement the blueline - as would a big two way presence on the right side.

Prediction,

4 comments of MG out GM'd again....

:picard:

Are you thinking of the same guy that signed Tanev, Kenins, McEneny, Eriksson, Zalewski, Tanner and Fox as free agents to name a few.

You can't have enough D and think in terms of a tradeable assett.

Think also of the player we didn't sign last summer ...Antoine Laganiere who chose Anaheim and has the following stats 59 games 8+6 in the AHL...I'm sure they haven't given up on him but he hasn't set the AHL on fire

Don't think he'll be anything special..so I won't be too upset if we lose out on the sweepstakes.

Heck, Danny DeKeyser is probably the best college UFA in the NHL right now and even he isn't anything spectacular. He's solid, but probably a 3/4th d-man...people need to not overhype these college players as much as they do

That went right over your head there eh

Yup, he was all the rage last year around this time - with even reports we had signed him, which proved untrue.

He got started a little late at UMass-Lowell and has only played 2 years with them despite already being 23, so I'm not sure how that affects his eligibility.

Indeed, seemed more a comment on CDC'ers than Gillis.

Bozak and Purcell?

I don't think he'll be a huge addition... But a true #3 defensemen would be a big addition to any team! Especially for free.
