Yannick Weber Appreciation Thread

the recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something.

I feel this thread is worthy as a Yannick has been solid in the roles that he has been given and b he has a crazy shot and c he is under-rated and hardly ever mentioned in the proposals/re-signings section for next season.

When we picked up Yannick for 650,00 I was so excited, not only being Swiss Canadian but because of his play for Montreal in the previous seasons, not forgetting his 21 pts in 32 games played for a strong Genf-Servette team during the lockout (and his play in the Olympics).

When we acquired Jason Garrison, he was meant to fill the Salo void on the powerplay but for some reason that has never/yet to amount. In 73 GP, Garrison has 7 goals and a rating of -7 while Weber, often playing on the 4th line due to injuries (1st line PP) has 4 goals with a rating of -3 in only 41 GP. While stats aren't everything, IMO Weber currently looks like the most dangerous d-man on the PP, while not scoring every shift, setting up rebounds and basically worrying the opposition.

With Garrison at a cap hit of 4.6 and Edler a 5 mill (6 goals in 54 games with a team low -29 rating), Weber looks like a bargain and the Canucks should look to keep him for the near future, especially as he will likely not demand more than $1 million and he is still only 25 years old. His shot will only get better and he can be trusted defensively, great qualities in a number 6 or at worst 7th defenseman.

With Stanton looking like the bargain pick-up on defence for the Canucks and Tanev being Mr Reliable, Weber is looking like Mr Under-Rated and can be counted on if one of the top 6 d-man are moved in the off-season, most likely Edler (aware of NTC). He has been through a lot in his time here, being sent down on waivers to Utica, returning stronger and often playing an unfamiliar 4th line role. Given some seasoning, he could become a very valuable asset for the Canucks going forward and should not be overlooked.

Agree we should sign him on another 1- or 2-year contract for <$1 million if he's willing.

Disagree that he's better than Garrison. He's small, and while he has good defensive stick skills/positioning, he can't handle the big power forwards. But then again, in a bottom pairing role, he's rarely expected to play against the top lines.

For sure. I didn't mean he's a better player in general to Garrison, I just think he's a better first option on the PP right now and better value with 4 mill less cap hit. If Garrison gets back to his best, that's a different story!

I agree, Weber's shot has looked really dangerous on the powerplay, especially when we manage to rotate the right dman (Hamhuis or Edler) to the middle of the ice, and Weber sneaks down to near the top of the circle. His shot is deadly from there.

Agree fully.

He gets MANHANDLED in the corners and along the boards against power forwards.

However, I would LOVE to have him as a 6 or 7 guy for under a million a year.

Just please....no more 4th line wing duties.

Stopped reading after definition of appreciation.

completely realize that was a douchy thing to do but thought it was easier to give a reason why than getting flamed for making the (possibly pointless) thread in the first place. sorry :) will remove, truly just wanted a thread about Yannick rather than my crapty writing skills*

Weber did about what I expected this season. He's too good for the AHL, but not quite good enough for the NHL. To boost his career a bit further he needs to go to the former SE division perhaps. If not, he's europe-bound. Here he's a depth guy, tops. If we think Corrado is ready for a bigger role, then Weber may be let go.
