NHL.com:

The Carolina Hurricanes on Monday signed defenseman Justin Faulk to a six-year, $29 million contract extension. Faulk will receive $2.5 million in 2014-15, $3.5 million in 2015-16, $5.5 million in 2016-17 and 2017-18, and $6 million in 2018-19 and 2019-20, for an average annual salary-cap figure of $4.833 million.

Faulk, who turned 22 this past Thursday, has three goals and 24 points in 65 games this season, his third in the NHL. He also represented the United States in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

"Justin has proven to be among the best young defensemen in the League as confirmed by his selection to the U.S. Olympic team," general manager Jim Rutherford said. "He has been and will continue to be the anchor of the Hurricanes' defense for years to come."

Faulk has scored 16 goals and 61 points in 169 career games with the Hurricanes. He has led all Hurricanes skaters in time on ice per game in each of the past two seasons, averaging 22:50 per game in 2011-12, and 24:00 per game in 2012-13.

For me that is a ridiculously over-priced signing for a team supposedly worried about spending money.

This is a fantastic contract for an excellent young player, not sure what people in this thread are on about.

How does a better defenceman signing for cheaper make Edler's contract look better?

People still think Edler is a steal of a deal lol.

As much as I like Faulk, that is a steep price. Tanev and agent see this and know they will cash in this summer well.

That was my first thought. Presumably they will ask for something north of $4 million on a longer term, or around $5 million on a shorter bridge type term.

Big cash for a journeyman type of defenceman like Tanev who is legitimately a #4 or #5 on a good team.

So our best defenseman is a "journey man defenseman". Think it's a little early to start drinking my friend

Lol, talk about overpayment batman!

Had to sign in to post this.

Please, Faulk is a great defenseman.

I don't think you realize how bad the Hurricanes d-core is, but him and Sekera have been saviors for them this year. He's 22, and he's been getting better and better every year he's been in the NHL. He's one of the best young dmen in this league, and this is a great contract.

How many games have you seen Faulk play? 3-4? No hurricanes fans are mad about this signing, not even 50/50. They're all extremely happy.
