Recommended Posts

the guy in the picture looks suspicious himself...

lol yah I thought they were showing a pic of a dude from to catch a predator or something. Guess you have to think like a criminal or troll to catch a criminal or a troll.

There are different types of trolls too - in my mind mostly made up of 4 types:

1) Trolls that are truly spiteful and are only there to bring hate, an argumentative attitude, and wreak havoc just for their own sadistic pleasure.

2) "Trolls" that actually don't know much about a topic and are genuinely lacking knowledge and or have some sort of special needs that just makes it seem like they're trolling when they're really not. (And this is not a hate on any special needs person, I treat them the same as any other person.)

3) Trolls that are completely ignorant and think they're always right no matter how much evidence you can provide that proves they are clearly wrong and need to change their way of thinking.

4) People who troll for the fun of it, and since most trolling is done over gaming//social chat websites, it's easy to do because a lot of people take games/interactive websites much too seriously. Not to mention that some people just are insecure and feel the need to always be right or have anger issues. These people almost are a magnet for people that troll for fun, because they deserve it.

In all of these instances, the solution to avoiding it can be summed up in one picture:

Some of the #4's are drawn like magnets to sensitive issues though.. ones that some people have a legitimate reason for getting worked up about, no matter how hard they might wish to ignore. Someone posted a link to a study about how some trolls score high for psychopathic tendencies (Machiavellianism, Sadism, Narcissism and/or stuff like that.) I can buy-in that some people (and not just the stereotypical anti-social nerds living in parent's basements) can get off on "trolling" as an anonymous and relatively consequence-free way to feed their desire to pump themselves up, manipulate and hurt others.

I know I've tossed the odd barb at angry people who take themselves too seriously - admittedly satisfying - but I don't go out looking for it, and I usually try to keep it on-topic and with some level of respect. I've found when I do so more often and not they soften and we find some common ground.

In short, I think the behavior is definitely worth researching.

Botchup at the Prov is an A Number One troll masquerading as a journalist. Botch is the fuel that starts all the mini trolls up. He is the original source and his minnions mindlessly spread the venom. But I could be wrong.

Trolling is not a crime.

Trolling and cyberbullying are not the same thing.

But can you see the thin edge of the wedge here? This is how these things get started. Look, if you are bold enough to have a strong opinion online about whatever it is that's got you riled up today, then you need to be able to defend your postion. If you're going to get all sensitive and holler troll when someone takes an opposing position yours or challenges you, then don't post hot button topics. Or any topics if you're not prepared to defend and debate. Otherwise get ready for the day when any of us can be hauled before the courts to expain ourselves.

As much as this seems like a joke, I actually have no doubt this sort of thing will be pursued anyways. There's always been the language police, so it makes sense that behaviour cops will exist too.

At very least, it shows how well off some of these countries are (or in the case of the US, pure incompetence) to have the time to focus attention, or even resources, on such trivial crap.
