Movie And TV Filming In Vancouver

One thing I've been curious about for a while now is, with a decent amount of movies and some TV shows being filmed in and around Vancouver, do they sometimes close off parts of the city for a few hours at a time like they do in NYC or is there a handful of large studios based in Vancouver?

hmm not too sure about closing down areas but this list is pretty good as letting you know when stuff is filming and in which areas of BC;

When they were shooting the X-Files movie in Pemberton a few years ago, they were desperate for people to do extra work for mainly the police scenes, still annoyed I had to work :/

You could have skulked around with a crazy look on your face while saying, "they're watching us".

A funny story I'll share....

A few years ago they were filming something in Lansdowne Zellers....I'd run in there to grab something quick and was told the department I was heading to had filming in progress. It was a little inconvenient but w/e.

The next day I was bike riding ... my usual route into Steveston...pulled around the corner to where the old gas station is by Cannery Row and stopped for a second to fix something on my bike. The same bloody crew was there, filming again! They were just doing a scene where they were filming a car "driving" (was really on a flatdeck truck). They shuffled me out of direct line of the camera (again)....lol. Must have thought I was some crazy scene crasher/stalker...was all very innocent and coincidental.

I laughed and told the guy "I do have a life to lead here...gonna be done soon?". He asked if I wanted to be an extra and I politely declined.

They film the Once Upon A Time series in Steveston...been down there a few times when it's in progress.

They don't actually close it off but people are pretty respectful of the area in you don't just strut on through where the lights/cameras are. Off limits by way of common sense.

Thanks for the story. That's just the kind of thing I was wondering about. Funny that you mention Once Upon A Time, I just finished watching that and Continuum, and I was like, "I have to ask people in CDC about this".

I was reading on the movie forums once that the idea behind Once Upon A Time was created and developed by a UBC film school professor.. pretty cool!

i was in new york like two years ago, and there was some movie being filmed on the streets, and nothing was blocked off outside of like a 20 foot radius. i think bradley cooper was there, or something. i know it wasn't some small budget deal, anyway

doesn't it cost HUGE amounts of money to have traffic or streets blocked in NYC?

there was some W or WB made for TV movie made in Victoria, a few houses down from where i was, and even they didn't close off the street, despite there being craft services and a few B-listers sitting out in the yard

Depends on where it is being done and at what time during the day or night. MIB3 caused an uproar a few years ago because they closed off lanes of traffic just so they could put Will Smith's ginormous 1200 sq. foot trailer. Then right around the corner they had to close traffic off as well because they were keeping his personal gym in a trailer nearly as big.

It was there for some time until people in that part of SoHo complained loudly enough to have it removed.

The old Lynn Valley public library is the studio they use for lots of Once Upon a Time shoots too.

There's always crew around there.

I was in the canyon a few months ago walking my dog and they were filming the new Franco/Rogen movie "The Interview"

They had lots of North Korean military vehicles, it was cool.

I live in Cloverdale and they used to always shut down part of the town for shooting Smallville. The main street was shut down for a week a few years back when they filmed Deck The Halls.

I used to work across the street from where they Filmed Stargate in Burnaby. Would always the them outside at the catering trucks in full make up, used to make for a good laugh.

I've also seen episodes of Fringe filmed here as well. Scored a free meal once from the catering crew.

i remember seeing some Cribs-like show about trailers a while back, and Will Smith's was on there. it was hilariously large and apparently it follows him everywhere he goes

what a goof

do you live in new york city, sabrefan?

No, I live in Buffalo, but I visit NYC a couple times a year. It's an interesting place to visit. If you're ever out east you should give it a visit. However there are some parts in the outlying areas that I steer clear of. Like Buffalo though it has lost a chunk of it's charm over the years.

Buffalo was once heavily populated with eastern European immigrants who melded together and formed unique traditions and unique communities, but all of the old generations are gone and it also doesn't help that the population is declining slowly.

The only part of the city that has resisted generalization change are the some of the Irish and Poles/Polish in South Buffalo.

With the exception of their population (it actually increases at a moderate rate) NYC has to an extent the same thing. It's becoming more homogenized as time goes on.

I remember a couple months ago, near the SFU Segal Business School in downtown Vancouver, they blocked off a block to film a movie. Don't know what it was for but I saw an NYPD cop car prop so I had to assume it was Godzilla or something...

Also on Robson Street near Seymour Street, few weeks ago they changed all the signs to San Francisco, or at least look like it was from San Fran and blocked that area and my guess was to film the upcoming Planet of the Apes movie?

They were filming a movie at the end of my street where I lived when I was pregnant with my first kidlet. It was the only way out of the street and they had it shut down in intervals. My parents were coming by to visit and they chatted with the crew, explaining that I was already past my due date and if need be, could I still get out to get to the hospital if I went into labour. The crew said I could (of course). Too bad I didn't go in labour that night - shutting down a tv/movie production would have made a neat story for my son! B)

In New West along antiques row on Front Street, or at least it used to be Antiques Row, they built a 3 block long set for a street scene for I, Robot Starring Will Smith. It was very futuristic looking. It took them months to build it and it completely took over the street front of all those businesses for that time. It stayed there like that for about another month. I passed it on my way to work most days and never saw any filming taking place then one day they started taking it all down. I dont know how much that cost them but its about 30 seconds of the movie for that scene. Wonder why movies cost upwards of $100 million bucks sometimes? Thats why.

They shot a movie once in my hometown
Everybody was in it from miles around
Out at the speedway, some kind of Elvis thing
Well, I ain't no movie star but I can get behind anything
Yeah, I can get behind anything
