What is with the random beatings in Vancouver? We're going to get a bad rep with tourists and international students..

Are these 2 women the same ones who beat up that bus driver earlier this month??

A Brazilian woman has been left traumatized after being pepper sprayed, punched and robbed by two women on Friday, when she asked for directions in downtown Vancouver.

Renata Rosino was leaving a girls' night out in a downtown pub near the Burrard and Georgia intersection at around midnight, when she asked the two women for directions to the nearest SkyTrain station.

The women told her to follow them, but led Rosino away from the station. When they reached the corner of Georgia and Hornby, they pepper sprayed her, kicked her down a set of stone steps and began punching her repeatedly.

"I tried to talk to them, saying they could take my things, everything I had, if they just let me go. But they continued to punch me," said Rosino.

At one point, the women began bashing her head on the concrete, and Rosina said she began fearing for her life.

"I really think they were trying to kill me. You hit your head on the concrete, it can be really serious. I really think their intention was to kill me."

The women eventually left Rosino alone, but made off with her passport, money, credit cards, driver's licence, iPad and iPhone.

Rosino was eventually able to stumble to the sidewalk and scream for help. A passerby came to her aid, calling the police, who took her to hospital.

The women are believed to be in their 20s. One is thought to have blond hair, while the other wore her hair in a ponytail.

Rosino's boyfriend later tracked her iPad and iPhone to a home in Ladner, where they were recovered from an unidentified man by Delta police. It is believed the man bought the devices from the women, and police say he is assisting with inquiries.

Rosino says she doesn't know why the women attacked her, but she thinks the women assumed she was easy target because she was a foreigner.

"I feel really afraid to go out alone this week. I'm a bit traumatized... and it will take some time to get back to my normal life again. I'm really scared.

"I thought Vancouver was safer than this, and now I'm confused — it can be dangerous. Every student thinks people are kind and friendly, but they have to be careful, wherever they are."

Vancouver Police Sgt. Randy Fincham said no arrests have been made and advised people not to pursue assailants themselves for stolen Apple products.

"Unfortunately, incidents do occur, on a rare occasion, involving violence, in the city. It doesn't appear, at this point, to be someone was targeted for a particular reason."

Fincham says police are scouring security video footage from stores in the area and analyzing forensic evidence from the scene.

For her part, Rosino says she will walk in a group from now on, and is looking forward to some justice.

"I want to see them in the jail, that's all I want, because they deserve it."

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information relating to the attack is urged to call Vancouver police on 604-873-7000 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers.

I'd be fine if police found them, drove them off away from the public and beat the absolute hell out of them. Totally fine with that.

hmmm... don't know - the image of a group of cops giving two women the Rodney King treatment doesn't feel right. Don't over do justice now.

It's a shame, but a lot of foreigners, especially international students are targets of violent theft, assaults, sexual harassment, etc.

Your post made me think of that Chinese student in.. Montreal(?) who got murdered, chopped up and then put into a suitcase - Jun Lin. God. Then there was that UK father who came here pleading for tips because his son was missing - Tom Billings.

No kidding, like the VPD doesn't have a bad enough rep without people supporting them taking the law into their own hands and out of the court's.

Shows theres stupid people everywhere. Risking serious jail time for assault and theft for what? A few hundred bucks? IF they get caught and get even only a couple years thats about a hundred dollars a year. Idiots and scumbags, thats an attractive combination. The people that attack others for looking at them wrong or somehow "dissing" them are just as bad, maybe even worse. How many people are in jail for a long time because of a nothing situation they could have easily walked away from. So stupid.

Young women carry bear spray for "protection" but it seems most of the time it gets used as an offensive weapon. Should it be banned? I dont know.

I don´t think Vancouver is dangerous at all...

honestly this girl made SO MANY mistakes about personal security it was clear she didn´t have any idea of what she was doing...

1) there´s something called "googlemaps" and "GPS", if you really want go somewhere take note of "key points" like what´s the nearest train/bus station from the place you want to go (bar, pub, school etc)...

-before leave your home/hotel know where/when/how and why you´re going to some place. if you don´t know stay at home...

2) if you want ask information about direction ask to a police officer. the Canadian Police is polite and smart so it´s better ask them than ask other people...

your friends aren´t smart and they don´t know the country just like you. the Police knows so ask them...

3) Why the heck on earth you will walk around with your original passport?! walk with a copy of your passport showing the 1st page and the page with your VISA. much safer.

the immigration will not ask the notarized document authenticated because the authentication of your country usually not worth in another country. and since you have your photo, ID, passport number and VISA number any police officer can check your status without the original document.

if really needed tell the officer where you´re living while visiting the country. if they really need to see the original document they can find at your house/hotel...

if you lose the copy no problem, you have the original document on a safe place and paper documents don´t last too much if not preserved properly...

honestly when I was in Canada I walked with the copy of my passport and the copy of my drive´s license and sometimes the copy of my Pilot´s License. done, nothing more...

4) a young girl walking alone after 11pm in downtown isn´t safe in any country...

5) always look around you and take care. no matter if you´re in Greenland or in Iraq. every single person next to you might be a bandit/terrorist so suspect of any wierd behaviour. if you note something dangerous head to a police station or to some area with large movement...

just remember. always consider the person next to you a possible threat untill you check and confirm the opposite. till that always be carefull and defensive...

the girl is from Brazil and don´t look behind while walking?! dude! kids here learn do this since their 5!

6) aham. you and your IPhone? let me guess. Brazilian cellphone services suck SO MUCH and cost SO MUCH that isn´t even worth travel with your Brazilian PIN/CHIP. why you gonna go overseas with that?

buy a cellphone while visiting the country, get a cheap contract (pre paid) and done! if you have problems at least isn´t with your home country cellphone and you will not lose your contacts...

7) ALWAYS have the phone from your country´s embassy with you, if you´re living with a host family give them this phone number too. if something happen your country will be able to track you...

8) If you knew you´re not on the right way BUT you have some idea where you are do you REALLY have to ask for some information? train stations in Vancouver are so easy to find you don´t have even to think about it! and what about some taxi/cab? if you´re really lost and really drunk a taxi would be a good idea!

with a new cold war ahead and nationalist movements around the globe people don´t need reasons to kill people from other countries. just in case, better be carefull than dead...

Do yourself a favour and stop pretending like you know what Vancouver is like.

She just had bad luck. Can happen to anyone anywhere.

We live in a supposedly civilized country where anyone should be able to be in public without worrying about theft/violence/etc.

While it's easy to just say that this particular girl made a few "bad choices", she's the victim here. Saying how she shouldn't be carrying what or shouldn't be out at certain hours, that's just blaming the victim? Should she actually be walking around wearing body armour, a flashlight and a magnum for protection?

I don't exactly whether it's law enforcement (or lack therefore), the justice system or just society as a whole, but my wife says she's been harassed in Vancouver more in 1 year than 20+ years in Japan.
