If Tavares asks for a trade. Do we go all in?

Recommended Posts

First and foremost, the most common answer will be no. But do really think about the Pro's and Con's.

Pro's

-Entering Peak.

-Has never had a down season compared to before.

-Only makes 5.5 Million through 2018.

-Number one Center for the next 10+ years.

-Helps intrigue many, free agents (Moulson, possibly Vanek).

-Only 23......

-Would have a team that is willing to spend on him.

-80 points shy of Kesler's stats. Kesler is 6 yrs older. Kesler has played 2x games.

-Jt makes others better.

etc

Con's

-Give up a lot. (But we are rebuilding aren't we.)

-Coming off injury.

-Need to have atleast one good winger signing for him right away. (He doesnt want to play with Bur.)

-Probably lose Kesler & Horvat. (Bo is a stud, but won't be close. 80 points shy of Kes. 6 yrs younger)

I would give, Kesler, one of our top four 4+ million dollar D, 1st round pick as always, and a prospect (Gaunce. if bo 1st becomes 2nd)

What the Canucks would consider fair, and the Islanders consider fair are two different things.

If Tavares is up for grabs someone will overpay. And we don't have enough to trade with.

Unless we're giving up 5-7 years of first round picks.

I'd rather trade assets and stockpile picks for 2015 so we can make a serious run at drafting McDavid.

Kesler would totally waive to go to a Tavaresless NYI, and Edler would waive to go anywhere...

I would go all in. Kesler would not be part of the deal. I mean the Isles can't even win when JT is healthy why would they trade him and make someone like Kesler part of the return just so he can leave in a couple years? If JT goes they are bringing back a boatload of prospects. Get ready to give up something like Horvat, Jensen, Shink, and 1st. But hell I'd still do it.

Kesler plays on his wing, sing another winger, Sedins and Burrows on line 2. *starts foaming at the mouth*

No. What it would take to get him wouldn't be worth it. It would kill our depth. Then wed have to start all over again in building up our assets, which we already have little of. Tavares is a good player to have when you are a contender. But he won't put this team on his back and carry them to the promised land if we are bottom-feeders.

Because they need more prospects? Never mind we don't have the quality of prospects to offer that would make that interesting enough to land Tavares without a significant roster player in return. And never mind again that it'd be assuming Tavares wants to waive to come here.

It's entirely possible they'd be asking too much for him, but I actually disagree re: he isn't a player that can carry a bad team on his back. He was in Hart trophy contention last season, and before injury this season, on pace for 90+pts without Moulson with whom he had chemistry. And the Islanders aren't exactly a powerhouse...

But yeah, in the end our 'top' players are mostly under NTCs and such so it's highly unlikely we'd be able to assemble what the Islanders would want, even if it were reasonable.

true. none of the boys would waive their ntc to go to the isles. just not gonna happen. i really don't think management has the assets to land JT because they'd most likely want an nhl ready, proven, scorer+prospects in return. i'd be one of the few who'd rather pass on JT and focus more on our own prospect pool. a JT deal would look like a team going "all in" willing to trade everything to restart a rebuild and build a team around him, which is what the isles were doing in the first place. i'd rather go after okposo, but if JT really wants out, maybe the isles won't have that much leverage

@Florence

I beg to differ. Jt's Islander's made the playoffs last year because he put the team on his back....some questionable moves by Snow singlehandedly demolished a slowing growing team. Major facepalm to snow*

The made the playoffs last year for the same reason the leafs did. It was a shortened season.
