Longtime Late Show host David Letterman has announced he will be retiring in 2015.

“The man who owns this network, Leslie Moonves, he and I have had a relationship for years and years and years, and we have had this conversation in the past, and we agreed that we would work together on this circumstance and the timing of this circumstance,” Letterman said in an official statement. “And I phoned him just before the program and I said ‘Leslie, it’s been great, you’ve been great, and the network has been great, but I’m retiring.’”

“I just want to reiterate my thanks for the support from the network, all of the people who have worked here, all of the people in the theater, all of the people on the staff, everybody at home, thank you very much,” he went on. “What this means now, is that Paul and I can be married.”

Letterman said there is no precise timetable for his retirement, but did say he’d be stepping offstage in 2015: “I think it will be at least a year or so, but sometime in the not too distant future, 2015 for the love of God, in fact, Paul and I will be wrapping things up.”

The news was first posted by R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, who is performing on Thursday night’s Late Show. Letterman apparently announced his retirement during the show’s taping.

I thought he would retire after his heart surgery in 2000. Quintuple bypass for christs sake. He stuck it out but was never the same after that. Watch his older shows and the energy level alone is much higher. It took a lot out of him.

Hope he enjoys a long peaceful retirement. I know Paul has always had other music projects going so he wont be taking it too easy.

End of an era.

Really gonna miss his interviews, very few can touch a good Letterman interview. So many phonies on tv with not much substance, it's a shame to lose someone genuine.

I'd like to see him do something like Seinfeld does only include more than just comedians and don't do it in a car.

That's got nothing to do with it. He's been planning this for a few years. Once Leno retired, it was only a matter of time.

Maybe. Or Dave walked into the bedroom and his wife quickly changed the channel back from nbc and he was all like... I'm retiring.

:D
