What do you think gillis or another gm will do with this team this summer

gillis has already stated he wont ask players with no-trade clauses to waive them. I kind of find it funny how Gillis said he is going to make tough changes like he did six years ago? what tough changes? ill give him creit for keeping that core intact but i dont follow what he meant by that? I also find it funny how after his little speech today how many people are all of the sudden on the Gillis bandwagon again. The record speaks for itself and nothing has been done. Its time for Gillis to go.

Nothing. I don't have faith in Gillis or whomever we get to pull a HUGE blockbuster trade/move that we've desperately needed since 2011.

But hey, I'd love to be proven wrong

and no Lou/Schneider/Hodgson crap was not blockbuster in the sense it vastly improved us.

Thats how trades work. Both teams are looking to get better. Blockbusters don't involve one team clearly winning the trade and the other getting the short end of the stick.

Obviously MG didn't get that memo

He also said if people don't buy into his vision they'll be moved. So anything can happen.

I think it's pretty clear from all the Gillis threads what direction we're going at this point. Re-tool with the current core, maybe some changes for significant players but maybe not, and we'll have cap space to add a significant piece in free agency if we can and it's the right fit.

What another GM will do if he's brought in? No idea, each potential GM is different, but I guess we needed another thinly veiled fire Gillis thread to ask.

Perhaps not resigning Naslund and Morrison?

2 scenarios...

IF Mike Gillis remains as the GM:

  • Torts will be fired with the $8m still owed all but eating up the playoff revenue from the last 2 seasons.
  • The Canucks will draft the BPA at 7-11, wherever they finish.
  • Gillis will attempt to make trades at the draft but will turn them all down as they don't fit the (yet another) "new" philosophy of puck possession and up-tempo play. He'll say that Kesler and Edler (the 2 guys he'll attempt to trade) are the perfect players for the "new" philosophy.
  • The Canucks will use the compliance buy-out on David Booth
  • The UFA market will at best bring in one or 2 depth players as there is no incentive at all for the big name/$$ UFA's to come to Vancouver. They are no longer a Cup contender (barely a playoff contender) and don't offer the cache of playing with elite talent that they once could. I also can't see them severely overpaying for a Vanek etc and suddenly making the "new guy" the highest paid on the team. Not to mention the fact that after the last couple of seasons only the most ardent of Canuck fan boys would see Vancouver as a go-to destination for UFA's. From management to coaching, the fickle fans and rabid news media, Vancouver is quickly becoming a "no-to" destination.
  • The Canucks will open the season with virtually the same lineup (healthy) that they have today with the exception of 2-3 depth players being swapped for depth or youth.

IF a new GM is hired:

  • The new GM is likely to be an Asst. GM or or Player Personnel Director for a current successful team which means he won't be hired until June just before the draft and free agency.
  • Torts will remain as head coach as the new GM will want to make his own assessment of the coaching staff.
  • The Canucks will draft the BPA at 7-11, wherever they finish.
  • The new GM will not make any significant trades (Kesler & Edler) at the draft as he will have only been on the job for a week or 2 and will want to make his own assessment of the players on the team.
  • The Canucks will not use the one remaining compliance buyout as the new GM will not have time to assess who that buyout should be used on.
  • The UFA market will at best bring in one or 2 depth players as there is no incentive at all for the big name/$$ UFA's to come to Vancouver. They are no longer a Cup contender (barely a playoff contender) and don't offer the cache of playing with elite talent that they once could. • The Canucks will open the season with virtually the same lineup (healthy) that they have today with the exception of 2-3 depth players being swapped for depth or youth.

Either way the Canucks will be an up and down team next season and if they can stay healthy they'll push for 3rd in the division or 7th-8th in the conference. If the injury bug hits again expect another 10th-12th place finish in the West.

My wish list:

  1. Get another play making C for the second line. If Kesler wants out, then either through trade or FA bring someone in to play with Burrows/Kassian/ (assuming he can play top 6 next year) on the second line. Place Jensen on the 1st with Sedins and Canucks have 2 solid scoring lines. I wonder if Santo between Burrows/whomever could get the job done?
  2. Figure out Hansen's place on the team. I love the honey badger but havn't seen much his old self this season. With Matthais/Richardson/Higgins the Canucks have a great third line. Hard to say where he fits with the team now.
  3. Richardson deserves to play at least 3rd line minutes in addition to PK time etc. Given this, Canucks need a 4th line C. Perhaps re-sign Dalpe? He's been pretty good so far, and if he keeps improving could move up the roster with injuries and whatnot.
  4. Diversify the back-end. Canucks have too many of similar 2 way D men. They need to add someone dynamic especially if MG wants to go back to the up tempo speed game. But hard to say how this could get done with the NTC's and whether other teams are willing to pay a fair price through trade.
  5. Besides Sestito, Canucks need a middleweight 4th liner that can bang and play good minutes. Making a push for a guy like Leo Komarov or someone similar would be awesome.

My epic post complete with detailed analysis went poof when I opened a new tab to check Carolina's roster. . . Boo hoo.

To summarize.

I think ownership calls the shots and that is true in most markets.

I think gillis stays, but whether he does or not, I say the GM does the following:

Continue to invest in Utica.

Decide on my core and my window. By this I mean is Kesler going to be part of your core in 3-5 years. If he or an existing prospect can't be a true #1 c in 3-5 years, I trade him if i can to get that piece. Same thing with Edler. If he can't be a true #1 d in 3-5 years I try to move him to get that piece.

If I can't move Kesler for a true #1c prospect or #1d prospect then things are harder. I think his trade value is maxed right now. I think we are already carrying the Sedins forward for mentorship and soon as a secondary scoring option. We don't need Kesler for mentorship and he probably wouldn't be my first choice anyway. I think being unable to move him slows a retool. I am targeting the development of a new core roughly 3 years out, and I'd rather get younger at centre.

I like Kassian and Jensen as future core wingers. I hope horvat can be a #1 c but I don't depend on that. I am hopeful that we get 1 first liner out of shinkaruk, gaunce and fox, but would be happy with a second liner a third liner and a bust. I like most of our d at their cap hit but I'm looking for a true #1 d prospect any way it can get him. If I can't move Edler I try to get a solid d mentor for him and tanev. Maybe bring salo back, I don't care if he only plays 40 games.

I build our systems around the future core and have the coach stick to those systems win or lose. I have Utica clone those systems so that we are developing our future players for systems they are suited to. This may mean that we play a style to which the Sedins are not well suited.
