I had a quick look through the remaining free agent list and the number of infielders with power that also bat left, is pretty thin....

I read somewhere that the Jays are kicking the tires on a Jonathan Villar reunion. It's kind of underwhelming, after talking about guys like Freeman and Bryant,, but he's a switch hitter and he can still run a bit.

Honestly, I'd rather see what the Jays have in Espinal than Villar pt 2.

Which is why it's a Minor league deal and is basically insurance, in case the bullpen has injury issues.

Some people are overly critical......

If you're going to be a good team, you have to have good depth.....and Biagini is NOT good depth. He's a bad pitcher, and if he ends pitching for them, then that's definitely not a good thing.

Some people can't differentiate their sensitive feelings from the facts.

Adding more fuel to the fire that Freeman might sign for with the Jays.

Vladdy was practicing ground balls today, not with a 1B glove.

Yes Jon Morosi was saying last night that the same guy who broke the Semien signing and Berrios Trade is saying that Freeman to Toronto is all but done.
I hope he’s right. We’d be a base stealer and maybe a bullpen arm or two away from being a legit favourite to make some noise in the playoffs.

Ross Atkins said Vladdy is open to playing some 3B and is still looking to add an infielder before the season starts.

Stop teasing us.

Couldn't they just alternate 1B and DH?

They could, but they also like to rotate the spot around Bichette and the outfielders too.

Not to mention that the Jays aren't a great defensive team. and Freeman is a gold glove quality player. Unless you're a catcher, the gold glovers are too important to DH other than as a rest day every couple of weeks. Vladdy is still so young and he has some good hands and a good arm, and with the weight he lost last year, he was much more agile. I'd like to see them give him another shot at 3B rather than make him be the regular DH. Have him DH when Ryu pitches if need be.

Chapman will help them out defensively.

"DUNEDIN, Fla. — The Toronto Blue Jays have addressed their infield needs.

Matt Chapman was acquired by Toronto in a trade with the Oakland Athletics, according to several media reports.

Shortstop Kevin Smith, right-handed pitcher Gunnar Hoglund, left-handed starter Zach Logue and left-handed reliever Kirby Snead were sent to Oakland in exchange for the all-star third baseman.

The 29-year-old Chapman had a .210 batting average, 27 home runs for the Athletics last season while earning his third Golden Glove.

The reported move comes a day after Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said that adding a new position player was a priority.

Atkins said he feels the Blue Jays have "closed the gap" in the competitive American League East but he's always looking to make his club better.

"I think the most obvious way to do that is in our infield and complementing it somehow," said Atkins.

Before the Chapman trade it was rumoured that the Blue Jays were pursuing free agents like Canadian first baseman Freddie Freeman and shortstop Carlos Correa.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published March 16, 2022.

Good news, they found help, but still keep future gold glove winner Vladdy at first base.

I can't say I'm disappointed. As much as I love Freddie Freeman, he didn't make sense position wise. Chapman is an excellent 3B and has power (although the average isn't great)

I'd still like to see a left handed power bat. I wonder if there's still money left to sign Schwarber, or maybe Michael Conforto if KS is too pricey?

Schwarber signed with Philly. There’s not too many left handed bats left to be had I don’t think.
