Guess Othani had made his mind up to take the first pitch, which is understandable with the bases loaded. Once he fell behind 0-1, he started chasing a bit. I'll take it, though.

If Ohtani chased it the first time, there's a good chance he chases again with two strikes.
RUPERTKBD
Really tough break (no pun intended) for the Pirates.....mega talented shortstop O'neill Cruz broke his ankle in a home plate collision.....

RUPERTKBD
I get that these two pitches could have gone either way and sometimes the Jays are the ones who benefit, but this sort of inconsistency is why I've been on the mechanical strike and balls bandwagon for several years now.... This series of tweets was somewhat in defense of Trevor Richards, but he's simply walking too many guys and when you miss that often, sometimes the ump assumes you missed on close pitches. It looks like that's what happened in this case. The tweet at the top shows to the two RBI hits Richards surrendered to the Royals. (The one on the left was a homer) Neither looked to be a bad pitch....

I'm not sure what purpose that would serve.... It makes more sense to me to have a universally accepted K-Zone. Maybe you could consult the umpires on what that would be, but I don't think it makes much sense to ask pitchers to learn a couple of dozen individual umpires' idea of what's a strike and what isn't. It isn't like the Home plate umpire would be eliminated. He would still have to call outs. Same as the other three crew members.
RUPERTKBD
In other Jays news, apparently The Crime Dog will be throwing out the first pitch tonight....

The home plate umpire can go over the strike zone before the game with the managers, or it could be submitted electronically. The pitchers already know which umps have larger strike zones anyway. I'd rather go full robot than continue with the status quo, but I think the game is changing too fast and alienating a lot of long-term fans in the process. I don't see how getting balls and strikes correct 100% of the time is going to alienate fans. I'd say that the universal DH and the pitch clock run the bigger risk of doing that. As far as I can see, MLB is attempting to appeal to a younger audience, because it's core fanbase are quickly aging. I think I'd be more worried about turning off these viewers because of ridiculously inconsistent umpiring, that I would older viewers deciding they miss seeing players get called out on strikes on pitches 6 inches off the plate.... RUPERTKBD
Gotta give Shatkins some credit here....when they signed KK to a contract worth 9 million dollars, my first impression was "really?" Now he looks like a bargain and I'm kind of wishing it was a 2 or 3 year deal.... 2

It was weird yesterday for me....SNET Pacific wasn't showing the game in HD. They were showing hockey, while SNET One was showing poker. I had to watch the home opener on SNET West in standard def.... My Cable package doesn't have the other Sportsnet feeds in HD....only Sportsnet One, Pacific and 360 and none of them were showing the Jays last night.
RUPERTKBD
Man Gausman doesn't get much help.... He watches the Jays hit 5 dingers last night and tonight they can't score him more than a single run. ....and as I'm typing this, the Tigers hit a two run shot.... RUPERTKBD
That was actually bad luck that Varsho got hit by that pitch... Otherwise it's back to the screen, Vladdy scores and Chapman is on 3rd....
