I was a big Expos fan, and a Jays fan too - from their first game in the snow. This team reminds me of the late 80s, when they were just starting to show how good they were. I think this team can win now though, where that other team needed to add a couple more pieces. I hope they can win the division. Getting Price was huge. Can the Jays keep him?

I think the Jays can. Having Donaldson, Tulo, Bautista, Martin & Encarnacion goes a long way in supporting him with great Offense and Defense, giving him a great chance to win. I think it will cost the jays 22-28/year over 6-8 years & I think that will be the big question.

The big issue in my mind is the Jays' internal "5 year" rule.

Someone is going to throw a big money, long term offer at Price in the off season. If the Jays want a chance at keeping him, they're going to have to make an exception to their current contract philosophy.

Personally, I think that you go ahead and do it for a guy like Price and Donaldson as well, when the time comes.

With Paul Beeston retiring, we might just see a different approach to contract negotiations, depending on how the team fills the the position. (There is some talk about splitting the job, with the new president handling front office responsibilities, while AA gets an expanded role in dealing with all player personnel matters)

I couldn't have said it better myself, I think you make that exception for a Price or Donaldson or both... These guys make your team a contender and they are guys that other good players want to play with.

That's a good point.

Players want money, but they also want to win. Having guys like Price and JD on a roster is going to make Toronto a much more attractive option to a prospective free agent.

How are the playoff match ups determined in baseball? Say Jays win th div and Yankees get the wildcard. Would it be Royals(1st) vs Yankees(4th) and Jays vs Astros?

Yep, 1st plays the wildcard. 2nd div winner plays the 3rd.
