NDP opposition, after the only other candidate in the race, MLA Mike Farnworth confirmed rumours he was bowing out, on Tuesday afternoon in Victoria. The party is currently led by MLA Adrian Dix, who said he was stepping down after the party choose a new leader, following his crushing defeat by Liberal Christy Clark in the May 2013 provincial election. Horgan had originally said he would not run for the party leadership, in order to open the door for newer blood to step forward and lead the party. But when only Farnworth entered the race, Horgan said he had been persuaded to run by those in the party and entered the race. The party had scheduled a leadership convention for the fall, but it is now expected Horgan will be acclaimed as leader. Warhippy
Better a reluctant leader than an entitled one
sonoman
I've known John since grade 2, and he'd be sitting in the Premiers office if Dix hadn't cheated to win the last leadership contest. John will work hard to unite a fractured party and hopefully lead a moderate NDP to win the next election and get rid of smiley.

goalie13
They sure picked the wrong day for this announcement. Gillis getting fired is getting the top billing on the news today.
DonLever
To be the leader of any political party, you need the support of its caucus and Mike Farnworth found he did not have enough support from fellow NDP MLAs. He did not have any chance of winning the leadership so he dropped out. No other NDP MLA has enough support to become leader, so it will be John Horgan by acclaimation. Just like on April Fools when Harcourt announced he wasn't re-newing his party membership and slammed NDP, Dix and it was anything but a joke. ronthecivil
The NDP isn't going to be winning anytime soon if they keep on trying to out green the green party while at the same time keep organized labour (many of whom work in foresty, mining, and the oil and gas industry) happy at the same time. Not that this bothers me. Hurray for forestry, hurray for mining, hurray for oil and gas and all those private sector union workers that used to vote NDP working to keep them out of office! Because as they all know, hurray for $$$!!!

Because as they all know, hurray for $$$!!! Lots of commentators including Mike Harcourt has pointed out the rural/urban divide regarding resource development. People outside of Metro Vancouver often depend on resource jobs like forestry and mining and for the NDP saying no to everything is not helping. Resource dependent jobs are often well paying unionized jobs and saying no to them really hurt blue collar workers. Environmentalists always point to tourist jobs but those are low paying wages. Restaurant jobs are not the most high paying jobs out there. Plus back packers are not going to 5 star hotels to see bears.
aGENT
Pretty much the NDP are out of touch and out to lunch. The Liberals may be borderline criminals but evidently the public feels that's a better choice than sheer incompetence. I don't particularly blame them. Shame we don't have a real party option to vote for outside the options of criminals and incompetents.
