J529
Bob Nicholson Markus Naslund Pierre McGuire Jay Feaster http://blogs.theprovince.com/2013/05/08/could-former-bad-boy-goalie-ron-hextall-end-up-in-vancouver-as-canucks-gm-lets-throw-some-names-out-there/ Laurence Gilman Where he is now: Vice-president of hockey operations and assistant general manager of the Canucks. In his favour: Gilman, 48, knows the team and the town. Gilman has strong relationships with the media in Vancouver. Has been chief negotiator with contracts and, with the ever-moving salary cap, that’s a major asset. Against the odds: Would he want to replace Gillis? Would Vancouver fans see it as a change, or the same old system? Is Vancouver the type of market that needs someone with a snazzy hockey resume to handle the GM gig? Gilman is listed as the head of amateur scouting as well, and Vancouver’s farm system hasn’t drawn rave reviews of late. Joe Nieuwendyk Where he is now: Was fired as the Dallas Stars general manager at the end of the regular season. In his favour: Played 1,257 NHL regular season games, scored 564 goals. The centre also won three Stanley Cups over his 20 NHL seasons. His management career included a stint in the Florida Panthers’ front office as consultant to general manager Jacques Martin, and then a gig as special assistant to general manager Cliff Fletcher with the Toronto Maple Leafs, before moving to the Stars in June 2009. Against the odds: The Stars haven’t torn it up of late, although Nieuwendyk, 46, did have some financial constraints during that time. Regardless, great players aren’t automatically great managers. Scott Mellanby Where he is now: Director of player personnel for the Montreal Canadiens. In his favour: Played 1,431 NHL regular season games, mostly on the right wing. Since his retirement as a player, he worked three years in the Canucks organization as a special consultant to Gillis, followed by two years as an assistant coach with the St. Louis Blues, and now this spot in Montreal. Against the odds: Would the 46-year-old be looked upon as another Gillis disciple, passing along the same message? Ron Hextall Where he is now: Vice-president/assistant general manager for the Los Angeles Kings. In his favour: Played 608 NHL regular season games, with 11 of his 13 seasons coming in goal for the Philadelphia Flyers. Won the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goalie in 1987. Since his retirement as a player, Hextall, 49, spent four years as director of pro hockey personnel for the Flyers. He’s been with the Kings for seven seasons and duties include contract negotiation work. Against the odds: Hextall has been rumoured for previous GM gigs in Montreal and Columbus. There might be competition for his services. Jason Botterill Where he is now: Assistant general manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins. In his favour: Again, the Canucks owners like to be ahead of the curve and Botterill, 36, is one of the rising stars of the management game. He played only 88 NHL games due to concussion problems. Upon retirement, he finished his MBA at the University of Michigan and worked at the NHL head office before signing on with the Stars at a scout. With the Penguins, he worked his way up from director of hockey administration and his duties include contract negotiations, as well as scouting. Against the odds: Pittsburgh is one of the benchmark organizations. Will Botterill wait it out and hope for the GM job there? Article from last month in Province http://www.theprovince.com/sports/hockey/canucks-hockey/Vancouver+Canucks+coach+John+Tortorella+Mike/9606340/story.html GM CANDIDATES Jason Botterill, 37 (Pittsburgh Penguins assistant GM) Upside: The Pittsburgh Penguins assistant GM has been on the short list for a number of GM openings and it’s not hard to see why. The former NHL player has a degree in Economics, an MBA and has hands-on understanding of how to run a franchise. Downside: Not known much in the Vancouver market. Laurence Gilman, 49 (Canucks assistant GM) Upside: The Canucks assistant GM and salary cap guru has an encyclopedic knowledge of the organization and the market after being current GM Mike Gillis’ first hire in 2008. Downside: Fair or not, would be perceived as a continuation of the Gillis regime. Ray Ferraro, 49 (Former NHLer, current TSN analyst) Upside: Impeccable work ethic and knows the market thoroughly, the former player and current broadcaster is bright, articulate and has a detailed vision of what makes for success in today’s NHL. Downside: No NHL front office experience. Julien BriseBois, 37 (Tampa Bay Lightning assistant GM) Upside: The Tampa Bay Lightning’s assistant GM is considered one of the smartest young hockey minds in the business and has extensive understanding of running a minor league franchise. Downside: No familiarity with the Vancouver market and would provide little buzz. Wayne Gretzky, 53 (The Great One) Upside: His hiring would provide a built-in publicity stream for the team and brings a world of hockey knowledge as a former player and coach. Downside: Has had some experience in NHL management in Phoenix, but has been outside the game for several years.
24K PureCool
Anyone but Feaster. If he is hired, then Torts obviously have too much say in this franchise.

24K PureCool
I would actually just promote Gillman to GM. Don't need a radical new vision that might screw with our prospect right now. And if Linden becomes president as rumored, this should be a pretty good management for at least the next year.
thaji
I just hope they bring in someone who is really good at Player evaluation. This is not just to help drafts but also signings, and players on other teams.Assistant GM's in successful organizations would be my target such as Boston, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Nashville.Jim Benning, assistant GM of Bruins would be my 1st choice because of his experience of player evaluation. Bruins have had great track record in drafting (Bergeron, Krecji, Lucic etc) but more importantly is trades as well Rask, Kelly, Smith etc. Here is the write up on him on the Bruins website.Jim Benning is in his eighth season with the Bruins and his seventh as the club's Assistant General Manager, as he was named to that post on July 14, 2007. In that position, he serves as an advisor to General Manager Peter Chiarelli on all matters pertaining to player evaluation, trades and free agent signings, in addition to assisting the General Manager in overseeing all individuals in their specific duties for the Bruins.Benning joined the Bruins in July, 2006 as the team's Director of Player Personnel and was in that position for one season before assuming his current duties. He came to the Bruins after twelve seasons in the Buffalo Sabres organization including eight seasons as that team's Director of Amateur Scouting. In that position, he oversaw the club's scouting staff and led the team at the annual NHL Entry Draft, in addition to scouting prospects at the high school, college and junior hockey levels as well as in Europe.A former defenseman, he was drafted by Toronto as their first pick, sixth overall, in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft and played nine seasons in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks. He played one season in Europe before retiring as a player in 1992 and attended college for one year before joining the Anaheim organization as an amateur scout. Noseforthenet
Actually would love Pierre Maguire as our GM. We need a guy who is better at drafting. Plain and simple.
YEGCanuck
I tend to agree. Gillis been dismissed is enough of a change at one time. Gilman has been a steady soldier for the organization. Why not give him a chance?

Just throwing that out there. He seems to have a good idea about what he's talking about when he is talking about prospects. Regardless of how long he has been away from working for a team, the point is the same. We need a GM who is better at drafting. He seems to have a keen eye for this stuff. Trebreh
I actually would welcome Pierre McGuire as GM lol.I love his passion for the game and his knowledge about players. He also knows how to treat the media and the fans and will not come out as arrogant like Gillis was.

And if Linden becomes president as rumored, this should be a pretty good management for at least the next year. Of all the rumors, speculations and fan proposals out there, this one seems to be the one I would most be on board with. Linden comes in as a face/identity for the franchise, Gilman handles GM duties moving forward. Where do I sign up.

Gillis's drafting was quite good, particularly recently. That was not a weakness. Right now I'm hoping they simply promote Gillman unless we're able to poach a more ready assistant GM from another, top team. Add say Nicholson as pres.
