nuck luck
This was the wrong move....absolutely shocked to hear MG got fired, or "relieved". I am currently going through my third phase with Torts; didn't like him at first hire, couple of months in I have been quite happy with his progress and new demeanor, now....I'm not sure he is able to adapt to a team like the Nucks and change his system, all of this coupled with the same issue of line pairings that I had with AV. Someone made a poll on who should get the most blame for this year....I think it's gotta be the players, owner, Tort's and lastly GMMG. GMMG has changed this organization dramatically since he first arrived...obviously some negatives, but the positives outweigh the negatives exponentially. I was hoping that the owners would promote him to president and hire someone else to handle the GM issues.... that was his only failing I think, the trades he was involved with due to the spite other GM's had with a former player's agent. Everything else I would have graded him with a B+ or higher. Now, we are left in limbo with Feaster as a possible replacement????? This is like my worst nightmare.... but the GM is irrelevant for now, my main concern is playing Tort's style of hockey with the players on this team. Unless Torts can change...I'm concerned for groundhog day next year.....AND we need an owner who is able to put trust in his employees and not try and micromanage, especially when he is not fully committed to the environment and 100% of his time is not spent on the Canucks. There's a few of us pro-Gillis fans on CDC and I'm sure there's gonna be a lot of "told ya so" comments after we see MG prospects flourish in a couple years....really wish we stuck with GMMG to see his plans come to fruition. Remember....GMMG was the one who came in and made the plans to turn this organization around, he did that and got us to the Finals. Now, with our own farm team....better prospects than when GMMG first arrived....and 6 years of experience under his belt, I'm sure he would have gotten us back to the Finals in a much shorter amount of time. Instead...we still have meddling owners, a coach who seems to be as stubborn as AV and a short-list of GM's who are not that favorable. As much as I like Linden....he doesn't have the experience, Feaster? please no., and the rest of our choices at the moment? I wouldn't have traded GMMG for the few options we have at the moment.... did the owners really think this through? Or did they get concerned over ticket sales from last game when the fans at the game chanted "fire Gillis"? Did the owners really make a hasty decision based on fans who can't even be bothered to watch the game and instead mobile-bate through each game? Pissed....Only saving grace for me is that I've read that GMMG was 'relieved' of his duties and not fired, hoping....praying that he is relieved of GM duties to focus on being President of this organization. Highly unlikely... (tear drop)

Kass
Give me some examples as to why Gillis SHOULD be fired. I bet I can counter 80-90% of them. Don't worry. I'll probably go for a wild haymaker and miss. Truth.
higgyfan
Don't worry. I'll probably go for a wild haymaker and miss. Ok but I'll back up Bryan in case you do connect. Wouldn't want anyone to get a head injury around here.
Tearloch7
Terrific perspective, OP 'nuck luck .. please just ignore the hateful cretins that will pop up like rats from under a garbage lid .. they are having trouble focusing on a new target .. it will be the Twins or Edler undoubtedly .. King Heffy
The trades were such a huge problem that they outweighed any benefits Gillis brought to the table. Neither goalie trade was remotely acceptable. I'd pull the plug on my GM's ability to make trades too if they were as awful as the ones Gillis made. Literally anyone we could possibly hire will be a huge upgrade.
jagori78
His inability to secure Abbotsford as the farm team. The way he tried to force Malhotra to retire. Wrecking the Canucks goaltending. His arrogance calling Hodgson a high-character franchise prospect, then dumping him for a low return, and trashing his character afterwards. The Ballard fiasco. Questionable FA signings. Overpaying for Garrison. Signing Zack Hamill, a kid with cocaine issues... The list can go on and on. For a man who says he's a great judge of character or talent, or else his family doesn't eat, he hasn't shown that ability. Add to that his arrogance and constant flip-flopping on the direction he wants to go; it was only a matter of time before it blew up in his face. jagori78
At the end of last season, Gillis said the team had to make tough choices and change the direction of the franchise. He made no positive changes, and the team went straight down hill.

The Stork
Wasn't it the owner who wanted tort and gm wanted another one? Apparently that wasn't the case Gillis wanted Torts cuz of his "defensive" system So Gillis went all out and hired him and signed him into a 5 year contract

funkyfresh
I agree, this was the wrong move and completely reactionary. Firing a general manager won't get the fans to come back to arena, winning games will. The only positive about this is that it will be easier for a new GM to ask players with NTC to give him a list of teams. The problem, I believe, is the top players (Sedins and Burrows) and their horrid season. How can you blame the GM when your top players just do not produce? Maybe it is an off season for them and they will come back up to at least 65 points and Burrows to 40. The Canucks would definitely be able to make the playoffs if this happens and the team remains the same. If Torts can manage ice time better and roll 4 lines, I think the turnaround won't take so long. The team finally has a decent fourth line and with Kassian's continued growth, it is not unreasonable to expect better results next season. Sedin - Sedin - Burrows Higgins - Kesler - Santorelli Booth - Richardson - Kassian Sestito - Matthias - Hansen Edler - Bieksa Garrison - Hamhuis Tanev - Stanton The only hole I see is a puck-moving d. Also, buying out booth to sign another player could be a better option. edit - I could be wrong and a shake up may be needed to bring the fans back as the core has gotten quite stale. All i know is that there was multiple sources in the last off season regarding Torts wasn't Gillis' hiring. You know Gillis wanted Torts because of defensive system how?
