Mike Rupp Scary Hit on TJ Oshie

Ehlers

Unfortunate incident. But hits like these are going to always look scary because tall players can't control the fact that their arms at most players head level. Edler's hits subject players to a lot of unfortunate positions just because he's bigger than them. I don't think Rupp meant his at all but gotta feel bad for the Blues. I think that's three big game players out for them now. I think it's a first round out for them again.

This isn't a bad hit because Rupp is tall and his arms are at Oshie's head level, this is bad because Rupp doesn't hit squarely through the body in a hit that makes contact to the head.

I blame Oshie personally, Rupp hit him the only way he could, Oshie had his head slightly forward and thought he could skate forever. Unfortunate, but if that happens to Henrik Sedin I ask Kassian to activate Kassassin mode and go fight Rupp. Then have Bieksa rough him up and try to get another fight out of him. Then ask Burr and Kes to wind him up. But I wouldn't be crying for a suspension.

This has nothing to do with the Canucks.

It's a rough hit and perhaps it could have been avoided but it's far from Oshies fault. He was just cycling the puck back and trying to make a play. Not the best but still that's just an unfortunate hit at the end of the day.

The post before mine referred to the hit on Alex Burrows, so I drew on that for my response. Also, to demonstrate that the hit wasn't anywhere remotely as bad as is being made out.

Looks a lot like the hit on Burr. Can anyone dissect and tell me how they are different?

Absolutely, they're different because Rupp doesn't hit squarely through Oshie's chest/center of his body. He clearly hits across Oshie's body, missing most of it, and picks the head. Niederreiter's hit on Burrows was directly through the chest of Burrows even if the head was also contacted, which is what made it legal as compared to the Rupp hit.

You want to try and cut across the ice where there is going to be nothing but traffic. What else do you expect is going to happen?

That Rupp would at least try and hit him through the body instead of the head?

And Rupp is getting a phone hearing today:

Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie

MIN's Mike Rupp will have a phone hearing today with @NHLPlayerSafety today for hit on STL T.J. Oshie last night.

Yeah that deserves a couple games for sure. Oshie was pretty stupid to try to cut around like that, but that's irrelevant to how dirty the hit was.

As for comparing it to the Niederreiter hit on Burrows... :picard:

Apples and oranges, hit on Burr was shoulder contact, this one... not so much.
