Canucks have only about $5.6 million to spend on free agents under projected salary cap

According to the The Province we only got about $5.6 million to spend. We wouldn't have any cap space at all if we still had Luongo. We can spend some of this little by little in the offseason. It's going to be tough looking for players that are consistent and are point a game players. One thing I'd personally spend some of this money is on goaltending. It has beeen the story of the season. We once had two top 10 goaltenders and lefted with a couple rookies that have no NHL experience. That's why if I were GM of this team I'd go for a big time signing like Brodeur. I don't see Brodeur wearing a Devil jersey again next season now that Schneider has been decided to be the Devils number.

We have tons of money to work with and if we spend some of this on some established consistent hockey players, we will find ourselves on top of the division and possibly a contender for the cup.

Go Canucks

It felt like such a lazy article.... basically painting a bad picture, so that if the new GM 'fixes' it, he will get praised.

I haven't read it but did the Province also point out that we're in the best offseason position we've been in over the last 4 years?

Because we are.

Guess what?

The Province is wrong again and you didn't provide a link.

Yeah this is why we have Gillman running the numbers instead of the Province.

We buy out Booth and trade some redundancies and we have loads of space. I ran numbers a week or so ago and having Jensen and Horvat on the team, buying out Booth, trading Hansen an re-signing our RFA's and Santorelli we had I think $8m.

And I'm no Lawrence Gillman.

"We wouldn't have any cap space at all if we still had Luongo. "

How so?

You say we have $5.6 mil?

Canucks still have to pay $800,000 of Luongo's salary, Panthers pay $4.5.

So, 5.6 - 4.5 = $1.1 million

But wait, there's also Matthias and Markstrom at $1.75 mil and $1.2 mil.

$1.1 + 1.75 + 1.2 = $4.05 million if we still had Luongo.

So no, your statement that if we still had Luongo we wouldn't have cap space is FALSE.

I've ran the numbers several times and we have lots of options. Buying out Booth gives us many more.

I assume Kassian and Santorelli are < $2.0 mil. Tanev is around $3.5 mil. Schroeder and Weber are < $1.0 mil. That's a full roster with Horvat and Jensen.

Now we'd still have over $5 mil to spend without making a trade.

I thought that Lu was paid $5.5 million each year but I remember that every year he gets paid his salary gets lower and lower

Can anyone say with a straight face that Schroeder comes back next year?

Kassian and Santorelli aren't worth more than 1.5M.

Well according to capgeek we have approximately $10 million in cap space next year. And say we buy out David Booth, that would then give us approximately $14 million in cap space. And then what if we trade Kesler? That would bring us to around $20 million.

Capgeek is not a guaranteed accurate source. And there's no guarantee Booth will be bought out either, especially when every time he was healthy he has been effective since arriving.

I also think that given Booth's recent play and that he only has 1 year left on his contract, we might even be able to trade him either for picks or as part of a larger package. Most likely to a cap basement team.
