[Signing] Habs Re-sign G Dustin Tokarski, 2 years

Recommended Posts

MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced today a two-year contract extension for goaltender Dustin Tokarski (2014-15 to 2015-16).

In three games with the Canadiens in 2013-14, Tokarski registered a 2-0-0 record, including his first career win with the Canadiens, on March 5 at Anaheim. The 5’11’’and 195 lbs goaltender earned his first career shutout in the NHL, a 2-0 win on March 16 at Buffalo. He posted a 1.84 goals against average, and stopped 88 of the 93 shots he faced for a .946 save percentage. In 10 career regular-season games with Montreal and the Tampa Bay Lightning, Tokarski displays a 3-3-1 record, with a 2.93 goals against average and a .902 save percentage.

Tokarski, 24, participated in 40 games with the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs thus far this season, registering a 20-15-3 record, with one shutout. He shows a 2.36 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.

A native of Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Tokarski was the Lightning’s third pick (fifth round, 122nd overall) at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired from Tampa Bay for Cédrick Desjardins on February 14, 2013.

The 1st year is a two-way deal and the 2nd year is a one-way deal. This implies that Budaj will be gone after next year. Very similar to the Lack contract of two years ago.

No word on financial details yet.

An interesting side note to this is that I was talking to Charlie Hodge at a Giants game and he told me that this was his pick when he was a goalie scout for Tampa.

Tampa was going to pass on him in the 5th round and Charlie threatened to quit as a scout if they didn't take Tokarski there. They ended up listening to him because he was so adamant. It turns out that was a good selection.

It seems even more appropriate now that Tokarski is in Mtl as Charlie was a Vezina trophy winner for them back in the day.

And then they trade him for Credrick Desjardins... yikes. Not sure if Desjardins is expected to be really good since I don't know much about him, but judging by his stats he hasn't turned out well.

You may not care but many of us who have watched him for years in the WHL and WJC do actually care.

Poolies also care as do Habs fans.

More to the point, if one truly doesn't care, don't bother clicking on the thread. It's not like the title was ambiguous.

If they groom him well, he might be a good trading asset for them down the road. With Budaj gone next year, he will get the Backup role but by that time, maybe Fucale will also be challenging for a spot. But still, having a good pipeline of G is never a bad thing.

The scouts probably pumped to watch this game.
