[Signing] Flyers re-sign Andrew MacDonald

Recommended Posts

When a player is interested in signing a few months before UFA and just before the playoffs, that should be red flag #1 that you are overpaying.

Not even sure he would have gotten that money on the Market lol.

Edler's contract just got better (valuewise).

He was due for a raise for sure, and with the way things have been going (in spite of the new CBA) it's not really that much of a surprise any more. More than he's worth, but the owners are the ones that keep handing out these contracts at every opportunity.

It isn't that bad. He was projected to get around 4.0 to 4.5 million per year. He was due for a significant raise and is a big minute defender.

Only slightly higher than what people wanted him back for. Signed until he is 33.

I guess this means Timonen won't be back next year. Philly currently has 21,850,000 locked up in MacDonald, Grossman, Schenn, Coburn and Streit for the next two years.

Philadelphia still has a lot of cap space even with this signing.

Noteworthy Free Agents

- Kimmo Timonen (UFA)

- Brayden Schenn (RFA)

- Steve Downie (UFA)

- Erik Gustufsson (RFA)

Philadelphia now has 59.6 million in cap locked up next season. The projected max is 71 million. That gives Philadelphia about 11 million in free cap to resign and replace some roster holes. (Keep in mind Pronger is LTIR'd again freeing 4.9 million). Timonen is taking his career year by year based on how he feels and how he feels the team is doing. If he wants back Philadelphia would make resigning him a priority.

If for some reason they needed to make space they would just as quickly push one of Grossmann, Schenn, or Coburn out the door. It is also possible that Lecavalier may be given away for simple cap space.

I don't know how people are ignoring the salary inflation we will be seeing because of the artificially low cap rising suddenly... and then rising again substantially when the new TV deal revenue starts pouring in.

Average players will be getting in the $5-6 million range... high level but not elite players will be in the $7-9 range. All on long 4-7 year terms.

His contract seems about right in the new landscape.

Out of those 3 mentioned, I doubt they would quickly rush Grossmann away. They'd probably move L.Schenn or Coburn before even thinking of anyone else.

All 3 of them have rotated on the hot seat. For a good while Grossmann had taken a significant amount of heat for being the most unproductive member of the defense and a liability to everyone he has been paired with. This is from earlier in the season.

With that being said Grossmann and Streit have now seemed to find something that works for them and turned into a reliable pairing. But we will see if that is enough to keep his value a priority when he has been so poor with everyone else.

A few other variables could come into play as well. Value may be relevant if Philadelphia is looking for an actual return and not just a dump. Luke Schenn's value is still very low but to his credit despite a reduced role he has played very well for Philly to end the season. They may deem him more valuable to keep around and attempt to ease back into a bigger role and see if he can handle it now. Coburn also has a limited no trade clause and holds the most significant role of the 3 as he averages the most ice time of all Flyer defenders.

Philly also may still be in the hunt for a true #1 defender and if they get the opportunity to pursue one it could come down to a matter of cap room or value or simply looking at the teams match ups and which pairs make the most sense.

In addition Philadelphia now has a couple of good looking defensive prospects who they have said will be given an opportunity to make the big club next year. Robert Hagg, a fresh 19, and Shayne Gostisbehere, soon to be 21, both signed entry level contracts and will/have seen AHL action this year. Shayne will debut tomorrow and Hagg has played most of the month and done pretty damn well. If they are particularly fond of what they saw from one of them they may move the player who is most easily replaced by the player they intend to call up. Or based on how they want the pairings to look.

My main point is even if Grossmann isn't as much on the hot seat anymore I wouldn't be surprised if any of them were moved.
