(Proposal) Youth Infusion

Recommended Posts

The core needs an infusion of youth. I do not believe that trading Kesler is the answer, I think that he is the guy to build the team around. With that in mind, I think Linden will make it his goal to get a winger to play with him. That is what my proposal is based on, enjoy.

Trade #1:

Markstrom + Higgins + Gaunce + 2nd (2014) to Winnipeg for Evander Kane

Winnipeg gets a goal tending prospect, a 20 goal scorer on a decent cap hit, an NHL ready prospect and a high 2nd round pick to get rid of a guy that hasn't got along very well in the Jets market. Canucks get a young, talented, local guy that has a tonne of upside.

Trade #2:

Hansen + 3rd (2015) to Carolina for Cam Ward (CAR retains 15%)

Carolina gets a grinder, and a pick to offload Wards contract, but retain a part of it. Ward has one more year under his current contract, and would be a great guy to come in and mentor Lack, and also creates a decent tandem. Ward has a championship, and has been injured and streaky of late, but a combo of his experience, and playing for a new deal in a contract season, he could have a nice year. Split the goal tending duties in two, and ease Lack into the starter role. If Ward wants to stick around for cheap after 2015, than do it.

Signings:

#1 - Zach Kassian - 2 year 3.5M (bridge type contract)

#2 - Chris Tanev - 3 year 7.5M (an important signing if Torts sticks around)

#3 - Mike Santorelli - 2 year 2.2M (utility guy in the lineup, hometown discount)

Buyout Booth or trade for pick.

Creates a lineup with youth on every line. A lot of center/winger combo options, these would be my lines...

In the Kane deal you hope that a return home, as well as playing with one of the best two way centers in the league would fix any attitude problems that exist. Winnipeg might not want a goal tending prospect, but I think you do what you have to get Kane, apart from trading Horvat or Shinkaruk. There aren't many other talented wingers like Kane with his type of contract that would be available. And I think its a stretch to think you could get close to a similar guy in FA.

I don't think Kane is the guy that Kesler needs. Kesler doesn't pass the puck as it is so there is no point in getting another shooter to play on his line with him. Higgins has actually been one of the only guys who has been able to develop some sort of chemistry with Kesler and that's why they have been playing together for quite some time.

Kesler needs a creative and elite playmaking winger (e.g. he played great with Patrick Kane on his wing in the Olympics). Obviously these guys are rarely available and hard to acquire. IMO, within our system Schroeder and Kassian have potential to help Kesler regain his form. They both have exceptional passing skills and I think Schroeder has one of the best visions on our team.

I'd say the Canucks should give them an extended chance to play with Kesler next year. Playing with younger guys might just spark Kesler.

I agree with the Kassian point, I think that he is developing into a premium set up guy, and he needs to be a guy that plays with Kesler in the top 6 on a regular basis next year. You put him on a line with a couple of one shot finishers, and it could be a deadly combo. I think that Kane/Kesler both have room for improvement when it comes to passing, but the speed this line could generate would be exciting to watch.

Exciting? Yes. But also potentially disappointing and frustrating. Kesler and Kane are both selfish players (not necessarily a bad thing) but there are so many times when they carry the puck into the zone and make a weak shot attempt at the net, instead of passing to a teammate. This problem would be solved if they share the puck more but I don't know if they could.

That being said, obviously, getting a guy like Kane would be awesome. He's the type of guy that doesn't become available very often. But I just don't know if he will fit the Canucks.

This wouldn't happen if they have confidence in each other.

Do I think Kesler want to pass to a Higgins or Burrows? No. A natural goal scorer in Kane? Yes. There's a reason the two individuals are in the big leagues, they can play well on a team.

Agreed.

The notion that Kesler is selfish and simply a goal scoring is insane. The reason he has low assist totals the past few seasons is because of his line mates not scoring. He had 50 assists in 2009-10 when he was playing with Samuelsson, a goal scorer (not a Hansen/Higgins type player).

Playing with Kane, a goal scorer, will no doubt increase Kesler's assists total.

Plus, don't we want a player that ease the load of Kesler? He has been carrying the second line for the past three seasons.
