Beer League Beer Rotation Ideas

Hi all,

As many of you know, adult league hockey is not very cheap. Either is beer in Canada.

My question to the CDC community is...do any of your teams have creative beer systems in place that make it the most fair across the team and/or potentially gain revenue for the team to lower costs? The traditional go down the list and get each person to bring a 24 is flawed as many people miss games. Sure, some people may not care, but I'm all about being the most efficient!

Sponsorships (ie. kickbacks where you buy, say, 9 cases of Molson Canadian and you get 1 case for free) are a great idea but they may be hard to come by.

One example I've heard is from a team where 1 person is tasked with bringing 24 (and carrying the cost of the 24). Each player pitches in $2 for each beer they drink (cost is about $1.67), and all of the collected money is put back towards the team.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...and O' Canada!

I bring an 18 to each game for my team. At the end of the night I tally up who drank what and keep a notepad in my phone. Some guys lay ahead, others fall behind. We charge 2.50/per and made about $340 this season for the team (jerseys, etc). The system misses the odd beer, I'm not perfect. Usually the guys who drink more would be the ones who get an extra so that seems ok to me.

I take two free beers per game as my "cost" to getting the beer every game, making sure it's cold (buying ice, my cooler etc).

Works for us.

I played as a spare on a couple different teams this year and it seemed like the guy who ran the team usually grabbed a flat of beer and there was a beer fund. $2.50 a beer and everything was recorded in a notebook with tabs/credits. If somebody steps up to be the beer cooler guy, it's the easiest way of doing it, and since everyone here drinks lucky, $2.50 a beer usually ends up with extra float for either next years beer fund or a couple cases at the year end team parties.

Our captain just assigns people to bring beer once the schedule comes out. If you can't make it that game it is your responsibility to have someone switch with you.

If you don't show up to a game you get a fine. The player with the most PIMS at the end of the season has to bring beer for the first playoff game. Our team has lots of money saved up so any other games the team pays for the beer.

My team sucks. We don't drink beer after the game.

no you should be drinking it during the game .... gatorade is for chumps.

also find someone who does home brew and become best buds get him to join the team suggest he bring some beers for a taste session and then get everyone to tell them it is the greatest and that they should bring more next game continue doing this until he stops bringing or runs out then find a new friend... seems pretty simple.

or ask around some local home brew shops many times they have beer in the back to sell (not sure on legality of it but i got a batch of some tasty German lager for like 80cents a bottle. )

Thanks for the suggestions. I was hoping for some crazy novel system but I guess it is as simple as it is. Tacking on an extra fee upfront is tough because leagues are already so expensive and we're all pretty young so money isn't flowing quite as much as cheap, crappy beer is. Going to hope a sponsorship or two works out and go with the rotation!

I find the best way is still the list. You can go alpahbetical or whatever. Also, fines for being late, missing your turn etc. If you have a good team atmosphere and you like to drink beer it shoud be in everyone's best interest to make sure this is accomplished without any hiccups.

In our league, each team has a designated beer man. (The guy for my team is actually part owner of a Beer and Wine store)

Each team has their own system, but the one we find works best is for each player to purchase a punch card. ($20/8 beers) Each time you taek a beer from the cooler, you punch one of the 8 slots. When you are out of slots, you buy a new card.

The thing I really like about this system is that it rewards good attendance at games. (Most nights, we're not out of there until well past midnight, even though most of us have to work the next day) When guys who don't show up much finally do and check their punch cards, they usually find out that they have been (involuntarily) buying beer for other guys who have been there consistently.
