How good do you guys think this kid is going to be? Under what class of players would you put him under - generational (crosby, malkin) Elite (Tavares, Seguin) Haven't got to see the kid play much so just curious as to how good he is going to turn out and if the team who drafts him is going to have a very bright future ahead.

A bit early to be making predictions already considering he's still a year from being drafted but I'd guess he'll be generational talent because of all the hype surrounding him for awhile now. I wouldn't be completely opposed to us pulling a Buffalo next season for a shot at him.

It's hard to know when they are that good that young. Right now at this age he is way above the others in term of skills and development. However we don't know if he'll keep improving or he'll eventually peak and others will catch him.

I think there was the same hype with Tavares having the exceptional status to play at 15 in the OHL and at some point was being labelled the Next Crosby. Even though he is an elite player, he's not a generational player.

All depend if his development continues at this rate or slow down.

If McDavid was a generational talent he'd have been putting up generational stats in juniors. He's clearly no Crosby or Ovie, but he could very well be a Tavares-like stud. God knows though - he could smash all records next season, or suffer a serious injury and never fully recover. Let's see how he's done a year from now.

One thing I do know is that I'm sick to death of hearing about him.

i agree. since the kid was 15 all i've heard is "better than crosby" but when i finally got my chance to watch him play at the wjc, granted as an underager on a team that underperformed as a whole, i was thoroughly unimpressed.

i don't get the hype.

Don't forget that the OHL is more competitive than the QMJHL. Not necessarily in a way that the OHL wins the Memorial Cup every year, but in term of depth of talent overall between all teams, there's always 4-5 teams contending for the OHL championship (this year London, Guelph, Oshawa, Erie), where in the Q it's pretty much a battle of 2 teams or sometimes only 1.

To get back to exceptionnal junior stats.

McDavid posted 66 pts in 63 games in his first year, while Crosby had 135 pts in 59 games (2.29PPG). However Crosby was 16 and McDavid 15. To better compare, this year McDavid had 99pts in 56 games (1.77PPG). But Crosby had 54 goals to McDavid's 28.

But again, I consider the mid-level teams in the OHL to be much better than the Q. Therefore harder to gets points in the OHL.

The only thing with McDavid is I don't think he'll be a perennial 30G scorer like Crosby, but I could see him as being a 100 assist guy like Henrik and Thornton, with a little more goal scoring abilities also.

But your right, next year we'll probably have our answer. Tavares pretty much stagnated after two excellent first year in the OHL.

So we should trade away our veterans, mishandle our youth and sign not so good players to big contracts and make them cornerstones of our franchise while continuing to lose at a rate surpassing every other team in the league?

But for Chandymen, you should check out the Junior Hockey Discussion forum. There have been a few threads there in the last year on McDavid and you'll likely get a better idea based on the existing posts about him.

...

Did you mean the QMJHL for the second 'OHL'?

He's the best prospect since Crosby.

I'd say that's arguable. I think he's good but I was more impressed with the MacKinnon hype in his time prior to the draft. Granted, McDavid has talent and another year to grow but I haven't thought of him as being as much of a sure-fire success in the NHL compared to some other draft picks in that time. That said, I also wasn't crazy-high on Tavares when he was drafted - I thought he'd be good but not as good as he got so quickly.

yes sorry

No worries!

He only had one less point than Crosby did in the WJC at the same age. Crosby's team won silver however. The true test for McDavid will be how he does in his next World Jrs where he will be counted on as a leader.
