[proposals] be a gm game: pick a team and make some moves

Recommended Posts

So I'm a little bored on my night shift tonight and thought I would throw this out there.

Pick a team (other than the canucks) and act like you are the gm. Say which moves (3-4) you would make this off season. Critique the post before yours and then make your own with a new team.

I picked NY Islanders.

trade one:

to NYI - Malkin; to Pitt - Andres Lee, Brock Nelson, Josh Bailey

why: Pitts is in a bit of a cap hurt this offseason (14 signed with 15 mill in space), they lose Malkin but gain three good young players that can play centre or wing. Makes them more versatile and gives them some cap flexibility and some solid depth. NYI do this b/c its Malkin and they want to win now since they need to give up a first next year. They get a great one-two punch in JT and Malkin, plus they have a ton of cap space to make it work. NYI also have lots of youth still.

trade two:

to NYI - Booth (35 percent retained), to Van - Alan Quine

why: rather than buy him out Van gets an asset moving forward and they make room for some young guy (can use buyout on someone else now too), NYI get a guy at 2.75M now that can play in the middle six.

sign:

G Halak or Hiller (3 yrs 5M per)

why: they need a good goalie

draft:

at 5th draft which ever guy is left btw DalColle, Bennet, or Draisaitl

why: b/c they are good

new line up

Strome - Tavares - Oksposo

1st rounder - Malkin - Grabner

Booth - Neilson - Clutter

Martin - Cizikas - McDonald (Boulton/UFA)

Visnovsky - Ham

Hickey - DeHaan

Carkner - Donovan

Strait (sign a better UFA maybe)

Hiller/Halak

Poulin/Nilsson

I beleive this line up is good enough to make the playoffs (maybe go a little Colorado on everyone). With a UFA signing or two thrown in they will have speed, depth, youth, experience, and much better goaltending. If all goes to plan with cap too they have maybe 10-14 Million left over so the owners wont be too upset (most guys have a few years left on their contracts too).

The Malkin trade is one of the worst in NHL history. It rivals the Joe Thornton trade. That's how bad it is.

Tbh the second trade is also dreadful, Quine has more value in his pinky finger than Booth has in total.

If you're becoming Isles GM, you want to shore up the goaltending, sign a long-term replacement for Mark Streit (Macdonald did a job this season but he's now with Philly), and improve the 2nd line wingers. None of these trades fix the current problems the Isles are facing.

goaltending with halak or hiller is shored up

2nd line winger is Booth or 1st round pick

alan quine split time btw the ahl and echl this year, and his great stats were as an overager (and if NYI struggle they can off load booth at deadline for a pick)

i said sign a D man if need be as a UFA - didnt feel like sifting thru them all to pick one as a only went with a few moves

as for malkin - he is overpaid and pitts has no cap space with him in the line up

bailey is a 40 point forward who is still only 24, nelson was on pace for 30 points in first nhl season as a 21 year old who is 6.3 and 205, andres lee was on pace for 52 points at 23 in first season at 6.3 227. if those two improve as they should they easily cover malkins points, add depth, and toughness. all three also give pitts an extra 3.3 million to go after a UFA. Throw in the Islanders 2nd if you want.

Malkin is overpaid? Let's take at look at Evgeni Malkin:

- Coming into his prime years, aged 27

- More than 500 NHL games under his belt, posting more than 630pts

- Three 100pt+ seasons, four 30goal+ seasons

- 100pts in playoff games

- 1 Stanley Cup, two Art Ross trophies, 1 Calder trophy, 1 Conn Smythe trophy, 1 Hart Memorial trophy, and one Ted Lindsay award

- Plays on a successful team with a style that suits his abilities

- Is an alternate captain

Finally, Malkin has a NMC that began at the start of the season. You think he'd accept a trade to one of the worst teams in the entire NHL? When he's chosen to sign for life on a successful team?

Furthermore, do you think that a fair return for this exceptional player is a glorified 3rd liner who has never broken the 40pt barrier in six seasons, plus an at-best 3rd line prospect in Nelson and a complete gamble forward in Anders Lee? You think those two-bit players would get a truly world-class forward in return?

Madness.

The equivalent trade is Higgins + Matthias + Richardson = Malkin. That's how ridiculous the proposal is.

pitts is going to have cap trouble with 4 guys signed to over 30 million (14 signed to 55million), plus d men in orpik and niskanen to resign.

they need to create some cap flexibility and get younger, which this would do.

the equivalent trade would more closely be kassian (if he becomes the 50 point power forward we all want), a player like sam gagner but bailey is better defensively, and gaunce. Too low yes but it was a thought.

As for the NMC when I scrolled over malkin's name on capgeek penguins page it said nmc for 2013-2014 only but I didn't realize that it didn't update for his new contract....so its all a moot point anyway.

and malkin hasn't played a full season since 08-09

That malkin trade gave me a good chuckle. Malkin is a franchise #1 C, in his prime, who is one of the 5 most gifted players in the NHL.

If the canucks were to make an offer for him, it STARTS, at Kesler + Tanev + 1st...

If it was the Islanders making an offer, probably Strome + Reinhart + Visnovsky

They're fine on cap space if they let Orpik go and call up either Dumoulin or Pouliot. Which I expect they will.

They already have a young team - Crosby, Neal, Malkin, Sutter, Gibbons, Letang, Pouliot, Bennett, Dumoulin, Maata, Fleury - this is no Vancouver Canucks here. Their core is all under 30 bar Kunitz.

You clearly don't understand the Isles trade you proposed. Bailey has never reached 40pts in 6 seasons - he was given plenty of top 6 ice time and never made the grade. He's a 3rd liner for life. Higgins has a 50pt season, a 40pt season, and three more of 38+ points. He's more valuable to the Pens in this deal than Bailey is.

Add in Lee - an unknown quantity - and Nelson, a kid who doesn't have the potential to ever become a Malkin-type player (or even a Kesler-type), and you have very little return for a truly exceptional player. Matthias and Richardson are both better NHL forwards than Lee and Nelson - not that it would matter to the Pens. If you were the Isles GM, and offered that deal, the Pens GM would call the phone company and put a block on your number.

Malkin scores more in 40 games than most players score in 82, including all three of the bit-part players you propose to offer the Pens.

List of players who haven't played full seasons since 2008-'09:

Sidney Crosby (has never played a full season)

Alex Ovechkin (only 1 full season in the last five, which was last season's 48 gamer)

Jonathan Toews (no full seasons in the last five)

Ryan Getzlaf (only 1 full season in the last seven)

Patrice Bergeron (has never played a full season)

David Krejci (no full seasons in the last five)

Daniel Sedin (only 1 full season in the last five)

Jason Spezza (no full seasons in the last five)

James Neal (has never played a full season)

Marian Hossa (has never played a full season)

Paul Stastny (has only 1 full season in his 8 year career, which was his rookie year)

Milan Lucic (has never played a full season)

Mikko Koivu (only 1 full season in the last seven, which was last season's 48 gamer)

Jeff Carter (only 1 full season in the last five, which was last season's 48 gamer)

Daniel Alfredsson (only 1 full season in his 18 year career, which was his rookie year)

Henrik Zetterberg (only 1 full season in his 11 year career)

Rick Nash (only 1 full season in his 11 year career)

Pavel Datsyuk (no full seasons in the last six)

If not playing a full season since 2008-'09 diminishes the value of top quality talent so easily, then I suggest we trade Henrik Sedin for Datsyuk + Zetterberg, Jannik Hansen for Hossa, and Kesler for Crosby and Malkin.

Also, Josh Bailey himself has never played a full season in his 6 year career.
