Free Agents (RFA and UFA) for Canucks 2014

Santo is number 1. Gaurantee you can snag him at a good price like last time. We know he wants to play here, so he shouldn't be overly expensive. honestly, I think anything under 3 million, which he will probably get, is worth it. After that, the biggest free agent on my list is Paul Stastny. If we were to only make one move this season, and no trades, Paul Statstny would be my move of choice.

Trev won't go for the quick fix and spend all our remaining cap space on one guy long term. Not yet anyway.

I think we'll be pretty quiet on the UFA front actually, and that'll be a good thing. Re-signing Santo is all I see happening.

Hire a new GM. Hire a new and young coach. Get our house in order re: drafting and scouting.

Then start to build this team the good old fashioned way, and really the only way in the salary cap era, and that is by very good drafting and player development along with making astute trades along the way.

I totally agree, Linden survived some very dark years in Canuckland.

He watched as year after year saw picks and players traded for patch jobs until the culmination of everything in 94.

He'll be patient. I think he knows this fan base will give him at least 2+ terrible years before they turn on him

that being said do you think we will rise fall or maintain next year?

Need team toughness and proper grinders to compliment the sedins, edler, kesler, hamhuis, burrows. The guys that I would go after to ensure that we have a better TEAM are:

1). Jaro Halak

2). Derek Engelleynd

3). Santorelli

4). Steve Ott.

None of these guys are sexy but I believe can all fill key roles on the nucks team and add much needed sandpaper. The free agent class this year sucks and guys like niskanen and stastny are going to got awful contracts from teams and no way should nucks get involved in that. With these additions canucks can package a few of their current roster players and get an impact forward and some additional depth.

With these signings in place I would offer our 1st rounder, Tanev and Gaunce to the Jets for Kane. Then buyout Booth. Nucks roster would look a lot better overall on paper and would be tougher and bigger.

Sedin Sedin Jensen

Burrows Kesler Kane

Higggins Santo Kassian

Ott Horvat Mathias

Extras cause we are never 100% healthy: Richardson/Hansen/Sestito. Horvat by all accounts is a Defense first player and as much as Ott is a prick he can play defense and shutdown the big guns of other teams. That 4th line could play big minutes something Linden has already stressed. The third line if it clicks could pop in more then a few goals and also allows nucks to move guys up and down the roster depending on who is performing.

D-core:

Edler/Garrison

Bieksa/Hamhuis

Stanton/Egeleynd

Extras: Corrado/Weber

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't Tanev need to be resigned as well? If so we should resign him first. Then santo then use the remaining monies to target a free agent which can help us both in the rebuild and making the playoffs. Not sure who yet cause like others have said we don't know who our GM is yet or which players we buyout/trade.

Tanev is an RFA. Don't need to sign him to move him. He will be looking for 3-4million range which will take our D's total salary cap to be disproportionate to our forwards given the models employed by other successful teams.

Why would Vancouver want to move Tanev? He was our best D men all year, one of our best players and he's only 24! He's still young and would be a pivotal part of our rebuild/retool. So please explain to me why you'd want to move/trade Tanev when we NEED to get younger! Juice, hamhuis, Tanev and stanton should be our untouchable D! Edler I guess we might be stuck with which means Garrison should be the odd one out (if your thinking we should move a D to bring someone in).

Because he is the only one you can move and get something back for. Edler said he wont waive NTC. Hamhuis has a NTC and you aren't going to move him (he was voted top nucks Dman last year). Garrison isn't going to be moved has a NTC and probably is at his lowest trade value and Bieksa said he is not waiving and intends to stay here. So with that you need to move Tanev and I agree he is a good dman but if you can bring an asset back like Kane it makes all the sense in the world.

Niskanen and Santo.

This. I also like Vrbata.

People are forgetting that re-signing the teams' RFAs + Santo will take up a good portion of the raise in cap hit. Dropping Booth from the roster is the only way we will see a UFA next season. Team needs to pick wisely...get the player that brings the most to the team. Niskanen's the man.

Of course I would love Statsny, but he will be getting more that Sedin $. Unless Kess is traded for pick/prospect alone (which I doubt), the team wouldn't have the cap space for PS.

The Pens will re-sign Niskanen for sure imo. He has been their best d-man. It's most likely why theyll opt to walk away from Brooks Orpik... whom I think the Canucks should pursue should they move Edler.

If they move Kesler, I could see them make a play for Stastny, but why would he leave that situation he's in, unless its to another contending team on the upswing? Just dont see it.

Id kick the tires on a goaltender for sure, and believe that they will. Depending on what these guys would see as acceptable term, the Canucks will look hard at Halak and Elliott if they are willing to sign for 2 years or less and share the crease. Hiller and Miller will certainly want long term and a clear cut #1 role.

If Jim Benning gets the job, dont count out taking a good run at signing 36 year old Shawn Thornton to add some of that tough swagger that this team could use, and certainlya guy that Benning knows and likes.

Benning is also getting an upclose and personal look at Meszaros who scored 7 goals and 22 points in 52 games this year. He's still just 28 and could be a decent short term add for the right price for a team looking for some offense off the blueline. Sami Salo may even be a good pickup purely as a depth guy for cheap.

It really depends what they do with other personnel, namely Kelser and Edler.... But I do think they will be aggressive on a number of players with what ever available cap they have to spend, but I do think we're looking at short term veteran depth pickups while opening up spots for some youngsters via trade, rather than long term commitments.

Rather move prospects or like Corrado or stanton to help get Kane (who I don't even want on this team) instead of our young stud d men. Trading Tanev will harm this team more then help it!

I also think it would take more then just Tanev/or a D to get Kane if we did go that route and really if we have to give winterpeg too much to get him, then do we really want him? I rather target another young guy via free agency or even draft. I don't want Evander Kane anywhere near this team especially not at the expensive Tanev!

Kinda hard to say, considering we don't even know who our GM is yet (and possibly our coach even). Then there's also the consideration of moves we could make prior to free agency to open up spots, and who will re-sign with their current teams.

In other words, who knows who the Canucks have their eye on.
