Aaron Ekblad vs. Seth Jones

Recommended Posts

Jones.

Athletic family, championship pedigree massive kid freakishly fast and agile and has a shot at his age that even Weber envy's, can make a pass block a shot and has a far sturdier less lanky build to him.

But honestly, Ekblad will get drafted to a team in the East and get a much more offensively minded team in front of him so...

Right now it's obvious Jons is better b/c he's proven he can play at the NHL level but at Jones age when he got drafted and currently when Ekblad will, Ekblad > Jones.

Ekblad: Better offensively, better defensively, bigger frame, better hitter.

Jones: Smoother skater, won more awards, better defensive awareness (+/- wise), less penalties.

...both were/are beasts at the age they got drafted but I just have to give it to Ekblad. If both were being drafted at the same time, I'd personally take Aaron. Again, obviously Jones is better atm so if anyone wants to know who will be the better NHLer, only time will tell but at the draft age, Ekblad is >

Ekblad.

Jones is more soft < Ekblad

More LHD than RHD < Ekblad

4 years of OHL > 1 year of WHL

6'4 217 > 6'4 207

Ekblad has better physical control

Ekblad is killer on PP

Ekblad is dope AF

They're both right hand shots...

Anyone who thinks its Ekblad doesn't watch hockey. Jones was much better at the same age, and is now emerging into a NHL star. Jones is much more explosive in terms of skill, is a game player, and his hockey IQ is better. Ekblad is on a lower tier. Come back, when Ekblad is in the NHL. Its unlikely that Ekblad will reach full potential in the NHL, because most of what he does in junior, won't translate well, while Jones was built for the NHL.

Jones is a potential franchise defense man. Ekblad, at best, is a second pair guy. Huge difference in Hockey IQ, and speed here. Jones, at the same age was miles better defensively as well.

I hate to use the WJR as an example, but Jones was the best defense man on that American team, while Ekblad was god awful. How can anyone say that Ekblad is better than Jones at the same age?

The only thing, Ekblad may have on Jones, is that Ekblad could be better on the PP. It's Shea Weber verses Cody Franson.

This NHL draft is a joke. Obviously people are going to try to hype up the kids because of their rankings just to make the draft more interesting, but none of these kids are likely going to reach their expectation. If Ekblad was even 1/10 the defense man, people are saying he is, then there's no way he shouldn't be consensus number 1 pick.

Did you basically compare Ekblad to Cody Franson???

Seriously do you just make this stuff up or do you actually watch hockey?

Yep. I wouldn't be surprised if Ekblad turned out like Erik Gudbranson. People though Gudbranson was going to be a stud too. Just doesn't have the proper tools to translate.

Have you even watched Gudbranson play or are you just saying this based on points?

Both Ekblad and Gudbranson are the same. They have the whole package, but lack a bit of foot speed, and hockey IQ. This is the same thing, scouts questioned Gudbranson about when he was the same age.

I never base anything on points. Especially when it comes down to prospects. If you follow the game, you would know things like this.

If you bother to watch the game, you'll realize that Gudbranson will always struggle. He thinks the game too slow. There's obviously still chances for both him and Ekblad to develop, but until they do, they will struggle against faster and more skilled players. Hockey IQ is something that can't really be taught.

Jones hockey IQ is though the roof. This guy can adapt to the game as it goes on. That's what sets him apart. That's why his defensive game is so great, and he looks like a veteran out there.

Again, i hate doing this, but back a year ago. Canada vs USA world Juniors. Canada beat up on Jones because Jones was being overaggressive with the puck. It took him 2 shifts to adjust, calm down and be responsible. This was the game - http://stats.worldjunior2013.com/Hydra/306/IHM306B14_74_3_0.pdf Jones still lead the Americans in time on ice, and was the best defense man despite losing the game but winning the Gold Medal. While, at the same age, Ekblad defensive game was a mess and was only out on PPs.
