carlweezer
I dont understand how this is even a debate. I personally think the Canuck's should always draft BPA and its not even close. I read soo many posters on CDC screaming that we draft size and grit because the current Canuck team lacks it and we will never be able to compete with The California Teams and the Pacific Division. People need to be patient and realize that these prospects arent going to be even ready for at least 3-5 years. By then how will the Pacfic look like? Nobody can predict. By the time our prospects will be ready to be an impact player other team's big bodied core will have aged. For instance. in 5 years. The following players will be; Jeff Carter 34 yrs old Joe Thornton 39 yrs old Patrick Marleau 39 yrs old Ryan Getzlaf 33 yrs old Corey Perry 33 yrs old Mike Richards 34 yrs old Dustin Brown 33 yrs old Brent Burns 33 yrs old Shane Doan 41 yrs old Aside from this, we need to take in consideration free agency and trades. The point being we dont know how the Pacific will shape 5 years from now so we cant draft players and assemble a team based on the unknown. So if Ritchie is the best player available at #6 then so be it and pick him, but dont draft him because he is big and he can play against the sharks, kings or ducks. Best Player Available needs to be the blue print in our draft strategy!!! and for my 2 cents, MDC or Nylander will be a Canuck come draft day. Size isn't everything, I'd rather have a team full of guys with speed and skill. That being said, a team should be built with a good mix. For example, Shinkaruk, isn't the biggest guy but has a TON of skill and his footwork is amazing. We make up for his lack of size with Kassian. And then there's COMPLETE players like Horvat, who is perfect in all categories, size, speed, skill, etc. We also need to realize that prospect also need to be developed into 3rd and 4th line guys. Size is not the most important thing, having a complete team with a good mix of players is. What I like about Linden is the fact that he knows a good mix is needed. He wants to run 4 lines. TimberWolf
You trade for immediate needs. You draft the best you can get.Only exception is drafting an immediate need that can make the jump to the NHL right away. That is rare.

I thought everyone knew Linden was a public relation hire to sell tickets and give the Canucks a better branding image. Linden will hire management but I guarantee you he wont make any decisions regarding who to draft and how to assemble this team.

aGENT
I'm personally hoping that somehow Draisaitl drops to us. If not, I'm fine with whoever else may drop or Ritchie, Nylander etc.
Absent Canuck
Always take the BPA . I suspect Buffalo will take Ekblad even though they need high end forwards.

Absent Canuck
I thought Florida was taking Ekblad? me too but I am hearing they are now leaning towards Reinhart. I bring up Buffalo because they are obviously in need of forwards and have a good group of high end defensive prospects. If Ekblad is avail at # 2 they will take him or negotiate with Edmonton. TOMapleLaughs
There's pretty much no case for Ritchie being the BPA at 6. However, Burke or MacT may take him ahead of us anyway.

Sorry but I have to disagree with you in respect to Linden not making decisions on who to draft. Yes he will do it in concert with the new GM and his scouting staff, but Trevor will play a big part of the drafting decision this summer. You heard him say he wants skill and speed, to make hockey enjoyable once again in Vancouver. That suggests to me that he will certainly have input into any player to be drafted. He as President will surely have final say

JeremyCuddles
BPA and team need are pretty much the same. That's how mediocre our prospect pool is. Given Shink's injury I'm not sure if he makes the jump next year, although Lack looks pretty good after his surgery. Horvat is pretty much our only gem . -AJ-
But they passed on the BPA a lot. Really? I figured they should have picked a d-man a lot of the time, simply because that better fit their needs, but they always seemed to draft forwards. c00kies
This isn't the NFL where rookies are expected to be a big part of the team right away. Unless the talent is equal, you choose the best player available. If our need was a young goalie, would you draft a goalie 6th overall? No. If you were to do this you would trade down and acquire other picks or players.

I suppose it's the same the Sakic, and the rest of the player turn GM's out there. Look, bro. It's one thing being a manager, but someone that knows the game like Linden or Sakic is a whole different ball game. You probably wouldn't know that since you weren't born till Linden retired, but that okay.
