BurgerKing
When Nonis was fired general consensus was he didn't deserve it. Hiring Gillis was high risk, guy with no previous gm experience, but it worked, he changed the culture, brought in some out of the box ideas and created a winner. Aquilini overrules Gillis and hires Tortz, another high risk move. What changes if you replace AV with AV clone; John Stevens? Safe is death. The move fails horribly, but he is somewhat covered because Gillis/Tortz buy outs are performance based. Good time to get rid of Gillis who is making mistakes and seems to be out of bright ideas. Also if you're not gonna win, you might as well be really bad, and get a high pick. Biggest issue with this team was lack of depth, which you get from better drafting. So how do you draw elite drafting talent to your team, you offer them the gm job of the Vancouver Canucks. A team that will spend and a city where you are a celebrity. They're courting Benning, the guy from LA and maybe others we don't know about. The guy they hire may not be the best nhl executive, but he will in theory be above average in drafting players, let him build the stable for 5 years, if he's also a good gm, it's a bonus, if not get another guy to finish the job. I think Aquilini understands everybody has an expiry date, how long has it been since Lou Lamorello and NJ were consistenly competitive? Yes the stars aligned in 2012, but for the most part they have been irrelavent since Niedermeyer left. It's a slimey way to be, but it may just get us a cup some day soon. Watermelons
Still don't know how this makes him smarter? Two superstar goalies traded away for basically nothing minus Horvat.. I wouldn't say "nothing". Matthias is looking like a real solid pick up and Markstrom was once considered the best goalie not playing in North America. They, along with Horvat, could become really good players in the future for the Canucks. If not, we got rid of our goalie controversy, got rid of the old regime (MG, AV, Torts) and can now start fresh. I don't see the problem. The goalie controversy was always going to be a problem anyways even if Luongo stayed. At least we got something out of it and everyone can finally move on. It's Linden's era now. Let's see what he can do. The past is the past and there's really nothing we can do about it. Why complain? Let's just support our team all the way. Our media is already going against the team I think that we as fans should at least support them all the way, no matter what. Everyone laughs at Edmonton and Toronto but their fans are as loyal as ever and stick with the team no matter what. Canucks fans should do the same. The future is bright. BureisBest
Loves his team, backs it up with his wallet, sometimes steps on his GM's toes apparently to try to get things done. We've got a passionate owner who wants to see this team win a Stanley Cup. I care about that more than measuring his intelligence.
King Heffy
Francesco, is that you? Let the GM do the job, and stay the hell away from the team. I'm sure that will stop once we have a GM who can actually be trusted to do the job.
Absent Canuck
I am crossing my fingers that Linden's 'vision' is wide open hockey where the Sedins can thrive ..........but of course we will have a pile of goals stacked up against us as well, and hopefully it will all be entertaining right up to the minute we draft McDavid. If it means lets go get UFAs and try to become the 7th or 8th seed with our tired old Sedins and disgruntled Kesler, then all he will get is a more frustrated fanbase, and a lousy draft pick when we could have got a franchise player or if we are lucky generational talent. So anybody who has a rich dad can become rich enough to own an NHL team? The rest of us are SOL. How about equal parts opportunity, ability and luck? "50 told me go ahead switch the style up, if they hate let 'em hate and watch the money pile up" Maybe not anybody...but being able to take over a thriving established business along with huge financial backing from family is a big factor. You can't deny that. Of course you can argue that there are plenty of people with very wealthy families who amount to nothing. However, the fact is having the backing and opportunity makes a tremendous differences in the possibilities. PS.
