jdatb
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=717623&navid=DL|NHL|home NEW YORK – Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron, San Jose Sharks forward Brent Burns andChicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith are the three finalists for the 2013-14 NHL Foundation Player Award, presented to "an NHL player who applies the core values of hockey – commitment, perseverance and teamwork – to enrich the lives of people in his community," the National Hockey League announced today. NHL clubs submitted nominations for the NHL Foundation Player Award and the finalists were selected by a judging panel. The NHL Foundation will present $25,000 to the chosen charitable organization of this year's recipient. The winner will be announced Tuesday, June 24, during the 2014 NHL Awards from Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas. The 2014 NHL Awards will be broadcast by NBCSN in the United States and CBC in Canada. Following are the finalists for the NHL Foundation Player Award, in alphabetical order: Patrice Bergeron, Boston Bruins Since arriving in Boston at the age of 18, Bergeron has established himself as a force on the ice as well as an even greater leader within the community. In 2006-07, he introduced "Patrice's Pals," a program that provides children from various youth organizations the opportunity to watch Bruins home games from a luxury suite and meet Bergeron following the game. Among the charities that have participated are Boston Children's Hospital, Defending the Blue Line, Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center, Franciscan Hospital for Children, The Jimmy Fund, The Home for Little Wanderers and Massachusetts General Hospital. Brent Burns, San Jose Sharks A passionate and charismatic individual both on and off the ice, Burns has donated more than $1 million to Defending the Blue Line (DTBL), which provides children of military families the opportunity to play hockey. He hosts 500 DTBL clients in "Burnzie's Battalion" suite at SAP Center each season and his hockey equipment drives at Sharks Ice at San Jose are the organization's most lucrative fundraisers each year. In 2013, Burns also shaved his infamous long hair and beard to raise $24,000 for DTBL and the Katie Moore Foundation, established by close friend and former teammate Dominic Moore to help those suffering from rare cancers. Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks A dynamic defenseman on the ice, Keith also has made an impact in the Chicago community through his charity, Keith Relief. After experiencing firsthand the challenges that medical procedures can present, Keith and his wife made it their mission to assist others by alleviating some of the financial and emotional burdens of families and individuals during times of medical crises. Keith Relief has raised more than $250,000 through benefit concerts since 2012, with all proceeds benefiting the organization as well as Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. History NHL players have a longstanding tradition of supporting charities and other important causes in their communities. NHL member clubs are constant in their quest to help local schools, hospitals and charitable organizations. Azzy Mahmood
Yes, good for them. I issue I have is with Duncan Keith being nominated for such an award. The criteria for nomination clearly state: "applies the core values of hockey – commitment, perseverance and teamwork – to enrich the lives of people in his community" While there can be no question that Keith has done this in the community, I do not feel that he applies those core values to his game on the ice. Committed? Yes, to elbowing opponents and taunting injured players. Perseverance? Yes, he is doggedly persevere in his attempts to embarrass the game with his antics. Teamwork? He gets a pass there. Players with the on-ice moral fibre of Duncan Keith should be ineligble for such awards. If you don't uphold the core values of the game on the ice - where it counts - then you shouldn't be heralded as some saviour of the people off the ice. jdatb
I don't really mind Bergy. Seems like a respectable player, haven't heard many, if any, complaints about him. Keith has a lot of on-ice problems, so I'd hope he doesn't win it.

My only problems with Bergeron, and why I don't like him, are The finger biting incident was his fault for trying to stuff his gloved fingers into Burrows' mouth but Burrows gets all the flak for it. Plus he makes such a big deal out of it, checking for bite marks as if human teeth could bite through a hockey glove, but then he played through the 2013 Stanley cup final with a hole in his lung. He was clearly embellishing Burrows bite if he could do that.

Neko
Bergeron definitely, he'll likely win. And Burrows finger biting... hey we can't say he didn't put it there. :D
Jägermeister
Yeah Keith is such a scumbag for what he does during a game, I hope he isn't recognized for helping families in dire straights during difficult times in their lives. Screw him and his charity. Good on all of them.

What you you expect Burrows to do? Tilting his head backwards to try to get out of the range of Bergeron's fingers didn't work. Should he suck Bergeron's gloved fingers instead? Bergeron was an embellishing baby on that play and yet it's Burrows' reputation that sunk even further.

Screw him and his charity. Good on all of them.Lots of players engage in charities. Look at our own Sedin's for a great example. What makes Keith so special? Why do we need to recognize him instead of the contributions of players who are far less ratbaggy?

Just because Bergeron tried goat him into doing something stupid doesn't mean that Burr had to do anything stupid in response. Having a hockey glove finger in your mouth isn't so obstructive to the point of serious discomfort, it's easy enough to just wait it out and know that it'll be gone in a matter of seconds. I like Burrows, but I hate that he did that.

Why do we need to recognize him instead of the contributions of players who are far less ratbaggy? The point of this award is to donate $25,000 to the charity of that players choice. So just because Keith is "ratbaggy" means his charity doesn't get to benefit? Players actions go a long way outside of the rink as well, and from all accounts Keith is a very good human being off the ice, him founding a charity and raising over $250,000 in 2 years is clearly a testament to that. It's just a game people, don't let it cloud your vision that the players are real people who contribute to society in other ways, and that they deserve the recognition they get for doing so. Are we not seeing the same thing? http://youtu.be/SxmZWIX0278?t=7s I do see Bergeron putting his hand in burrow's face, commonly known as a face wash. The at 12 second, burrows moves his head closer to the hand and hold Bergeron's arm.
