[Report] Sharks GM says coaches should stay after collapse

Recommended Posts

SAN JOSE -- Sharks general manager Doug Wilson angrily vowed Friday that changes are coming in the wake of a historic collapse in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but he said he'll recommend to owner Hasso Plattner that coach Mclellan and his assistants be retained.

The Sharks became the fourth NHL team to lose a best-of-7 series after being up 3-0, falling to the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference First Round.

"To our organization and to our fans, this is not a nick or a scratch," Wilson said. "This is an open wound. When the emotions are raw, the emotions should run deep and resonate and live for a long time. We have already started the process of what decisions we're going to make. … There are options. Status quo is not one of them.

"The process has started. It's not too complicated, fairly easy to figure out. Our coaching staff is part of that and … my recommendation is that our coaching staff be part of this going forward."

This is the right move. The Sharks just need to tweak a bit and see how things go next year before doing anything drastic. They have all the right pieces for a cup winner.

Before the collapse, the Sharks were being praised for just about everything.

Wilson wants McLellan to stay because of how the team does so good in the reg. season. But most likely the owner will see that another wasted year because of another playoff collapse. The owner must get the support of fans back, because right now the Sharks are looked as chokers and their image has been ruined.

Honestly, I think this will lead to Wilson being gone.

I'd like to see his name added to the mix of candidates if this happens. Drafts well, and got very good value for guys like Clowe and Murray. Not saying he should be the frontrunner, but Linden would be wise to at least give him an interview.

They may look to move Thornton and Marleau imo. Don't think Boyle gets resigned either. But they have to move some forward depth to get some defence.

Agreed. It's pretty clear that the issue is that these guys are no-shows and hurt the culture of what could otherwise be a much more respectable team. Plus being so stacked on offense means Vlasic and Niemi are worked to injury/ineffectiveness trying to hold the back end.

and If I'm Wilson, I try to precipitate my own exit.

GM vacancies will be plentiful around the NHL not only this summer but also over the next couple of seasons. Currently, there's obviously GM vacancies in Vancouver and Washington.

It is likely that either this summer or next summer there will be GM vacancies in Toronto, Saint Louis(maybe), Philadelphia(maybe), New Jersey(retirement), NYR(retirement) and obviously NYI if they're sold.
