Anti-gay group: Businesses ‘trample’ the freedom of Christians by serving LGBT people

Buddy Smith, the leader of a group that opposes equal rights for LGBT people, argued this week that businesses in Mississippi were “bullying” Christians by advertising non-discrimination policies.

As WLOX reported last week, Mitchell Moore, the owner of Campbell’s Bakery in Fondren, started providing local businesses with “We Don’t Discriminate” decals after his state passed the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act to give companies the right not to serve gay and lesbian customers.

“We hoped really that we as business owners could finally speak for ourselves and not have politicians speaking for us,” Moore explained. “They kept using business as an excuse, saying, you know, ‘We need this for businesses so that we can prevent discrimination against Christians.’”

He added: “We’re in Mississippi. I’ve never been discriminated against as a Christian.”

By Friday, the blue stickers had been distributed to over 400 businesses.

“It may be political, but I’m not making that stance,” Moore said. “This is about business. This is about a business owner and local business saying, ‘Hey, don’t listen to the politicians. We will sell our product to everybody.”

But in an interview with One News Now on Monday, American Family Association Executive Vice President Buddy Smith suggested that the decals were an assault on Christian freedoms.

“It’s not really a buying campaign, but it’s a bully campaign,” he asserted. “And it’s being carried out by radical homosexual activists who intend to trample the freedom of Christians to live according to the dictates of scripture.”

“They don’t want to hear that homosexuality is sinful behavior – and they wish to silence Christians and the church who dare to believe this truth.”

Smith warned that businesses that agreed to display the non-discrimination sticker were complicit in taking away the rights of Christians.

“If you do that, you are agreeing with these businesses that Christians no longer have the freedom to live out the dictates of their Christian faith and conscience,” he insisted.

I am sorry but someone's personal religious beliefs should not strip away someone else's basic human rights! People using religion as an excuse to deny someone the right to basic human such as loving another human being is beyond disgusting!

Hypocritical to complain about discrimination when you actively discriminate against a certain segment of the population.

Seriously, is tolerance too much to ask?

Good point, seems like the same could be applied to the anti-religious brigade. IMO we really need to get out of habit of judging people from their appearance or sexual preferences. Its the inside that counts and has all the grounds to be judged.. These people clearly have too much time on their hands..

I believe the dictates of scripture are to love you neighbour as yourself, judge not lest ye be judged, turn the other cheek and to be known for your love. Did I miss anything? I'm not aware of any Christian rights according to scripture. Except I suppose to receive freely the gifts of God, and to offer it freely to as many as will receive it.

Thanks for separating the 'truth' from hyperbole and 'bullshirt' .. Jesus preached tolerance and love, above all else ..

Somewhere along the way, the message got lost on those 'disciples' who decided to 'interpret' Gods word for themselves.

Shouldn't they hate the sin but still love the sinner?

I'm not religious and I'm as chillax when it comes to rights and all... but I don't agree with laws forcing people to behave/act a certain way.

People should be allowed to believe in whatever they want, even if what they believe is racially, sexually, whatever insensitive.

If a business don't want to deal with those in the LGBT.... well, more business for other places then.

I disagree. Someone's right to be a complete waste of oxygen does not trump a minority's right to be treated like a person.

I find it unbelievable when people do something completely opposite of the core doctrine of what they claim to believe..

The core doctrine of Christianity was boiled down to "Love God. Love people". Refusing to serve homosexuals doesn't exactly follow that. Sure according to them homosexuality might be a sin but if they hate homosexuals then they themselves are also sinning.

Eloquently summarized .. there can be little wiggle room for argument .. Jesus would have 'tats and several 'piercing's', were he here today .. and once again, the doubters would cast him out, as he cast the 'users' from the temple, and some would be bereft of hope for they would once again be worthy of 'their own sin' .. such is life.

So not taking away peoples' rights takes away peoples' rights to take other peoples' rights away.

It was hard to think of an analogy for this guy since he makes no sense, but it's like Country A invading Country B. Country C refuses to invade so Country A invades Country C for being "too violent".

I can't believe any logical adult can think in this manner.

I am anti-religion because of things like this , peoples religious views impacting others in a negative way, and i will happily Judge {tell them to pull their head in} anyone religious or non-religious if their thoughts or actions affect others in a negative way.

If religious people keep their faith to themselves , treat women equally , accept that gay and lesbian people have exactly the same rights as every one else , keep their hands of boys and young men , do not try to deny a womans right to control her own body , accept that a person has a right to die when they wish, then I am fine with them.

Well said. I believe people should have the freedom to do whatever they like, as long as their actions cause no harm towards others. If seeing a gay person shatters you so badly that you can't handle it, I pity you.

It is in our own self interest to stand up for the minority groups ,for those who are persecuted for no good reason , to paraphrase marty niemoller , they came for the jews and i did not speakout , they came for the communists and i did not speak out , when they came for me there was nobody left to speak out.
