zipzap2013
http://www.vancouversun.com/news/John+Horgan+acclaimed+leader/9797953/story.html VICTORIA - B.C. NDP MLA John Horgan won his party's leadership Thursday, after no other candidates came forward to challenge him before the entry deadline. Horgan was acclaimed party leader after a 5 p.m. cutoff for entries into the leadership race. The 54-year-old MLA for Juan de Fuca is expected to take over from Adrian Dix next week on the Opposition benches at the legislature. He's scheduled to appear at a media event in Vancouver on Sunday. Dix announced he was stepping down as leader after the party failed to win the 2013 provincial election. Horgan had briefly competed with Port Coquitlam MLA Mike Farnworth for the party leadership earlier this year, before Farnworth abandoned his campaign in April to endorse Horgan. Horgan becomes the 16th NDP leader, dating back to the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in the 1930s. He was first elected in 2005, but had served as a senior staffer to three NDP premiers in the 1990s.
Provost
I am a fiscal conservative and social leftist... Horgan was the only guy from the NDP that could get my vote.. No idea if he can drag the party behind him out of the 1950's though. That party deserves David Eby as their leader... not an actual intelligent candidate. Primal Optimist
I find two things funny and flawed right out of the gate on this guy: He was made the leader unopposed...so we don't know how much support within the party rank and file he has...and secondly he was a staffer with 3 former NDP Premiers in the 90's....so they were tossed out of office back when he worked with them..and now he is the acclaimed leader... FAIL ndp....fail. Why does the party not see this for what it is and it is in fact a lost election right out of the gate.
Ghostsof1915
Jeez. For pity's sake just appoint Lana Popham as NDP leader. She's everything Clark isn't. Smart. Runs an organic grape farm on the Island. So she knows small business and farming. She has a Degree from UBC in Geography and Urban Planning. And yes, she's beautiful. Unlike Clark she won't sell us out for pennies on the dollar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lana_Popham

So while I wouldn't say she should be put in charge nothing wrong with some of her ideas.

ronthecivil
The NDP missed a huge opportunity here. No leadership race means no news.Isn't that the standard operating procedure? Certainly was last election. What's your plan? It's to not be the liberals! We can do much better! How are you going to do it? It's to be fair to BC! We can do much better! We're not the liberals. Can you be more specific? We plan on doing what's right for BC! We can do much better! We're not the liberals. And so on and so forth. Any time they actually release policy information it scares BC into waking up long enough to keep them out of power.

ronthecivil
I thought the idea of a new leader was to not repeat what they did last election?Except that actually stating policy positions is not only dangerous for public opinion, it can be lethal within their own party.Pro pipeline? The green members hate you.Anti pipeline? Lot's of people in the pipefitters union going to be pissed.Pro logging? The green members will certainly want less cut, no raw logs etc.Follow those logging policies? Some of the biggest unions in the province take it right on chops if they follow through.Running low on money, what to do.....Raise corporate taxes! Hurray, lot's get behind that one! In bad news, those that are the centrists in the party get a sick feeling in their stomach when they now how it will affect jobs....Never mind that when you do budget projections based on their policies you end up having to raise taxes and (gulp) lower some services which tends to please nobody.Ok, let's just decide to go one way or the other.Go hard green. Well, all the centrists politically that would like to vote NDP hold their nose and vote liberal to save their jobs and the economy.Go hard core jobs and union. Congrats NDP, you have finally won back your core voters and grass roots members. Too bad you lost some of your superstars to the green party and can now look forward to a sure split vote. When the ideals of your own party are so radically at odds with each other going out on a limb and stating your plan is akin to painting a target on yourself. So back to operation "Anything but the Liberals" even if it didn't work that last two times. But third times a charm eh?
