higgyfan
Hoping the Canucks keep him on as Assistant GM, although I think he might want to be the GM and would be insulted by the offer. He's a magician with the salary cap and has came to MG's rescue often enough. He seems to be the 'last man standing' of the old regime. Anyone like him as GM? http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/hockey/vancouver-canucks/Vancouver+Canucks+assistant+Laurence/9812839/story.html

Anyone like him as GM? http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/hockey/vancouver-canucks/Vancouver+Canucks+assistant+Laurence/9812839/story.html Not sure 'capology' qualifies a person to be a GM, but 13 years as an AGM is a lot of time served. Would need a lot more information about his hockey sense - so it's hard to say. “I didn’t play the game at the NHL level and didn’t get to this position through the scouting ranks,” he said. “But I’m an educated guy who has worked for NHL teams for 20 years, the last 13 as an assistant general manager. I understand every facet of this business implicitly. To suggest I don’t understand the key components of a competitive team is laughable to me. But that’s for others to judge. I’ve been around long enough to know the value of a third-line centre or a shutdown defenceman or having character guys on your fourth line.” I don't doubt he knows the business, the value of a third line center, or the compenents of a competitive team - still, it's hard to give him the edge over a guy like Benning, who seems to come moreso from a team building background. They'd probably be a pretty good complement to each other.

Tearloch7
There is always a place in any 'business' for a guy like him .. I hope he stays .. what about Lorne Henning?
Fred65
I hope Gilman stay, if he doesn't I'm sure there will be a number of teams that will sign him on spot. Lorne Henning I'm not as sure about. He really headed up the pro scouting I thought and to be honest there's been more then a few hiccups with that department...Booth and Ballard for a start
YEGCanuck
Gilman sounds like a good sports business guy. It would be nice to know he can still contribute to the success of the team. Based on the little I know about Gilman I don't think he is the right person for the position of General Manager.

spur1
Gilman is a bean counter and a darn good one. Keep him on somehow. A GM needs to be a hockey guy and speak hockey to the other GM's he is dealing with. An old boys club. To work in the NHL you have to be one.....a player at one time. Used to be a player at any level was fine but the bar has risen.

nuck nit
I like him as a person. He has quasi-scouting experience in Winnipeg.although he never scouted ,himself. I would keep him in the organisation in his present role if he does not get the GM gig.

Even though that quote makes him sound like a bit of a douche, he is eminently qualified. Having said that, I do not want to see him as GM. It is even stated he is a close friend of Gillis and the reality is he was AGM through what have been some questionable management decisions and even contract decisions for this team. I would rather he stay as AGM or in another role but the one driving the bus comes in with a completely clean slate and approach to building this team going forward. DeNiro
Doesn't matter how good he was with the cap with Gillis making the moves he did. Not sure how personable Benning is, but he might need a guy like Gilman to help balance their dynamic if he's hired.
King Heffy
He's done a great job but his strength isn't in player evaluation, which is a pretty important skill for a GM to have. He'd probably do pretty well as a VP specializing on the business side, but I don't see him being a successful GM without a guy like Bennng as his assistant. I like the guy, but he's best suited for his current role.
