The Toronto Maple Leafs signed head coach Randy Carlyle to a two-year contract extension on Thursday but assistant coaches Dave Farrish, Scott Gordon and Greg Cronin will not be returning next season.

Carlyle, who was entering the final year of his existing contract, took over the coaching reins from previous head coach Ron Wilson with 18 games remaining in the 2011-12 season.

No new assistants have been hired as yet.

"It was important, after a disappointing end to the season and the arrival of Brendan as team president, to conduct a thorough review of the organization as we continue the work of building a winning tradition and culture for the Maple Leafs," said Maple Leafs genereal manager Dave Nonis in a statement. "That process started with the head coach, and as we analyzed it, we decided together that Randy Carlyle was the right person to lead this team.

"In Randy we know that we have a leader who has enjoyed a high level of success as both a player and a coach, including a Stanley Cup championship. It was important that the positives Randy brings to our team were not overshadowed by a finish to the season that we all must take responsibility for."

So what do you guys think? Think it's a decent-good signing but not essentially an improvement. He is an above average coach but the way he approaches his players, some don't like it and don't follow along the same page.

He's a good coach, he's just in a tough spot with the Leafs. Bad contracts are going to haunt this team (Clarkson, Phaneuf). I mean really, it's not as if Mike Babcock would instantly turn the Leafs into a Cup contender. Carlyle really is getting the most that he can out of that group.

I believe he is a good coach. He has a very odd group of players that have no real identity . He needs to get that sorted out before he gets any consistency from the Leafs.

They have no 'character' leadership .. Phaneuf is a coward, Kessel is very skilled but has the heart of the Tim Man, and Clarkson needs some plug on the other team to fight him occasionally so he appears to give a rats rectum .. Lupul never plays a full season, and is a turd, and Kadri is a worm of a 'man' .. the guy with the most character on their team just may be Gleason, a 6-7 guy.

Lol @ people who think Carlyle is a good coach.

A good coach wouldn't observe the territorial massacre that occurs each game and do NOTHING to even ATTEMPT to change it.

Washington did the Ducks a tremendous favour by saving them from Carlyle and now he is haunting the Leafs.

WHY

You are a Leafs fan .. does it make sense to fire all the 'kitchen help' and keep the Chef? .. not sure the reasoning .. maybe they bring in Oates and Muller and let one of them ascend to the throne when the Leafs choke in February??

It makes no sense.

None at all.

A guy like Trotz is available, someone who has engaged in the art of the fabled 'defensive system' and instead we extend Randy Bobandy.

Brutal move by Shanahan.

Good extension, he got the Leafs into the playoffs 2 years ago after several years. He deserves it, he is a good coach aswell who knows how to get his players to the best of their abilities.

They need more help on their roster though, wingers are good but I think adding a first line center is crucial and maybe some more depth instead of guys like Orr and McLaren.
