Question for fishermen or fisherwomen

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just went fishing for the first time yesterday. I am inexperienced so I was a little nervous. Luckily the guys I was with had lots of experience so they were understanding and took it slow with me.

My question is when trolling, is it normal for your rod to bend? Is that a good thing? If so, how much should it bend?

It's been a long time since I fished, but I believe it is normal.

If you have any sort of weight on the line, whether it be a downrigger or a cannonball, that will drag on the line causing the rod to bend. Perfectly normal.

It depends on the action of the rod. I have never done much trolling in my life but there is going to be some bend in the rod and obviously it will bend a lot more when you hook into a fish. The action of the rod should be stamped on it just above the handle with the rod make and model and manufacturing info. It will read light, medium, etc. The lighter the action the more it will bend.

Grew up in Haida Gwaii, spent many hours fishing. You'll always have a bit of a bend, especially if you're using a down-rigger with a cannonball. You need some weight on your line to reach the depths you want to be fishing at, so even if you aren't using a canonball you should have a bit of weight on the line, which will cause the rod to bend. Some rods are stiffer than others, but you should still have some bend.
