Nigerian
Every year you see young guns step up and play exceptional whether it is right out of the gate, a mid-season call up, or strictly slotted in during the playoffs. In recent years names like Toffoli, Pearson, Saad, Bennett, Kreider, Krug, Maatta all come to mind. It seems young gunners fit the high tempo, high speed style of play that the Playoffs bring. Our youth seems to manage to make the lineup, but only in a lesser role aka the 3rd or 4th lines. I feel like we are misusing a youth in the way that we put them in a shutdown or high energy role while most of our recent highly touted prospects, as of right now, are more offensively minded than defensively. When Jensen came into the lineup he shook up the offensive woes that our team was having and seemed to give the team somewhat of a rejuvenation. Now imagine Jensen's impact on the 3rd or 4th line playing with the likes of Sestito and Richardson rather than Burrows and Henrik. With last years draft we got two highly touted forwards, one being a pure sniper (Shinkaruk) and the other more a two way center (Horvat). This can really boost our offensive woes next year and hopefully shakeup the roster and give the top 6 some real energy that we haven't seen since our Stanley Cup Run. Next year I would like to see our youth mixed more throughout the top 9, given they play and earn it. We have a great defensive players in Kesler, Higgins, Burrows and somewhat the Sedins all in the top 6. These older players surrounded by youth (which could take some pressure off the young guns defensive role) seems to be working well for teams like Chi, L.A, St. Louis, Pits. As well with our 6th Overall pick this year I'd hope to see at least two or three rookies make the team next year. Barring any injuries and that they actually deserve the roster spot I would like to see a huge youth infusion next year. Whether we do crappy, mediocre or outstanding it would benefit us extremely with the experience, a high draft pick we could obtain or the team actually excelling with youth. My Hopeful 2014-15 Lineup (with existing players no trades/ FA's) : Sedins- Jensen Shinkaruk- Kesler- Burrows Higgins-Horvat- Kassian Santo-Mathias-Hansen Juice-Tanev Hamhuis- Garrison Corrado- Edler Or: Burrows- Henrik-Jensen Daniel-Kesler-Shinkaruk Higgins-Horvat-Kassian Santo-Mathias-Hansen Juice-Tanev Hamhuis- Garrison Corrado- Edler
CHodgson9
Ultimately, their play will decide whether they ought to make the team. If they make the team, I imagine it would be in some type of top 9 / top 6 capacity for Horvat/Shinkaruk/Jensen
Shinkaruk_9
Daniel Sedin - Henrik Sedin - Jensen Shinkaruk - Horvat - Kesler (Horvat and Kesler take face offs on their strong side) Higgins - Matthias - Kassian Burrows - Santorelli - Hansen Hamhuis - Bieksa Edler - Tanev/PMD Stanton - Garrison Now that looks like a line up with depth, and that's without any of the possible UFAs out there

erkayloomeh
I agree with op. It seems like when our young players get a chance they are immediately relegated back to tthe farm as soon as they do something wrong. One thing I liked about pat Quinn when he coached here was he would keep throwing you out there. He did that with erkayloomeh ( ) when he came here and he turned out pretty good. You can grow through your mistakes and I don't think AV and torts were patient enough
smithers joe
it sounds like several cdc'ers have had experience coaching in the nhl.....your all a lot smarter than me.....i'm just a fan.

I'm not entirely sure if you're being a smartass or not, I'm going to assume you are; It doesn't take experience to see the obvious. Young Players are needed to succeed in todays NHL and every team that is currently in the playoffs right now has at least a couple of them. 5nothincanucksohno
Daniel Sedin - Henrik Sedin - Jensen Shinkaruk - Horvat - Kesler (Horvat and Kesler take face offs on their strong side) Higgins - Matthias - Kassian Burrows - Santorelli - Hansen Hamhuis - Bieksa Edler - Tanev/PMD Stanton - Edler Now that looks like a line up with depth, and that's without any of the possible UFAs out there Love that line-up. Although the realist in me says Horvat and Shinkaruk should be in the AHL.
Tearloch7
Love that line-up. Although the realist in me says Horvat and Shinkaruk should be in the AHL. Horvat is not eligible to play in the AHL ..

Young Players are needed to succeed in todays NHL and every team that is currently in the playoffs right now has at least a couple of them. Not all the youth on those teams are playing big minutes, Most aren't. The Canucks do have youth on the team though; Tanev, Kassian, Stanton, Schroeder, even Jensen. Its probably more likely that the Canucks needs a better balance of everything rather then just youth.
Shinkaruk_9
Love that line-up. Although the realist in me says Horvat and Shinkaruk should be in the AHL. Well, they have been set up to succeed with one of the premier two way forwards in the league. It injects youth, Shink and Horvat can make a big difference, sort of like when Galchenyuk and Gallagher made that huge difference.

Minnesota has Niederreiter, Brodin, Kuemper, etc. Chicago has Saad, Shaw, Räänta, etc. Boston has Smith, Soderberg, Krug etc. Montreal has Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Eller etc.

Only Kassian and Jensen look ready to me. They wouldnt be playing on any other teams either. Kassian is finally starting to hold his own,
DownUndaCanuck
Assuming we make no trades/UFA splashes: Sedin - Sedin - Jensen Higgins - Kesler - Kassian Hansen - Santorelli - Horvat/Shinkaruk/Fox Burrows - Richardson - Matthias
CanucksSayEh
I think Torts did a great job with our younglings, all of them had very promising years.
PhillipBlunt
I see a trade made for Evander Kane. Rumblings of Kesler mentioning wanting him here, and the chance to play with Kassian too. Kane - Kesler - Kassian Daniel - Henrik - Jensen Higgins - Matthias - Santorelli Sestito - Richardson - Horvat That's deadly.
Robongo
Our young guys weren't ready this year, and are still likely not ready. Kassian can most likely move up to a top six role next year but I feel Jensen would be better suited playing on the top line in Utica marinating. He's not ready to face the top competition that the Sedins face night in and night out . He's still very raw and he needs to prove he can't be consistent and bring it evey night. As for the rest of our prospects, I think only Gaunce is ready and most likely in a bottom six role as a winger. But him too would probably benefit with a year in the A with some callups opportunities.

Isn't that the truth. It is as simple as slotting player A into B as long as he is 20 years old. Very easy I simply cannot understand why Tort's could not see that? thad
I agree with the OP. I haven't even coached a peewee team but I just watched my team decline for 3 years and our kids get pushed to the 4th line because Hansen tries hard. We gotta give these kids a little wiggle room to see what they got. Is Jordan Schroeder a bust because he's not filling the net with Sestito? He's been an amazing goal scorer his entire life and played with the best kids on his team and now he's gotta make magic with Tom Sestito haha. I think we gotta give our youth a vote of confidence now more than ever. We got nothing to lose and everything to gain. The grinders aren't getting it done, they just can't score. We've been doing it for years. Every time a top six guy gets hurt we call up a Bill sweat and play him in the 4th. Even Jensen's first games he got the 4th. I wanna see em get a chance to be the guy they've always been. Instead of putting Schroeder on the 4th and telling him to play simple and dump the puck in forcheck and get off.. Tell him, alright kid I'm gonna play you with Ryan Kesler, he's our best player. Go out there and do what you do naturally. Take some chances and be the goal scorer you've always been. This is your big chance to be the guy you were in junior in the pros... Again I'm no coach but if I was a guy like Schroeder, I'd play my ass off after getting brought in like that. That's how I'd like shinkaruk to be brought in.
