[Fine] Bruins' Thornton fined $2820.52 for unsportsmanlike conduct

Recommended Posts

NEW YORK -- Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton has been fined $2820.52, the maximum permitted under the CBA, for unsportsmanlike conduct during Game 5 of the teams' Second Round Stanley Cup Playoffs series in Boston on Saturday, May 10, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 19:13 of the third period. No penalty was assessed on the play.

The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

It was so juvenile and in a league that doesn't like to be "embarrassed", the penalty itself serves as such (an embarrassment). I know there are limitations based on daily wages/percentages, but give the guy a game at least. His chuckle afterward showed that he really was quite proud of himself. Eight year olds do that stuff.

I guess this is how the NHL rolls though...storm a hallway and it's a major no no. Spray someone in the face with a rather assaulting move and, well, it's ok. They sure do pick and choose but if the league is ok with this, I expect we'll see more of it.

I feel bad for PK. Earlier in the series people made racist comments about him and now he gets sprayed by a water bottle. Hey Thornton, this kind of crap is not acceptable.

I would say that in line with what he's already had to endure at the hands of Boston, there should have been a stronger message sent.

But that's ok...they keep firing him up and he plays better that way. Fools.

EOTM: those were words that were being exchanged from both sides in trash talking....I believe, all players were on the ice too (line change?)...different when it's an actual action that goes beyond words. At least I feel it is.

Don't poke the bear? It's the Bruins that poke and poke and poke and poke and spear and punch and yap and dive and punch until a team retaliates once which in turn unleashes a team wide goon response which the refs condone by either not calling it or sending players off from both teams. Don't retaliate? Even better, they'll just run you out of healthy bodies. Play eye for an eye? Well then the Department of Player Safety will come calling, and this time they won't be handing out fines.

The moment the Bruins whined about the penalties and the NHL listened, this series was over.

Are we actually saying that the Bruins are getting preferential treatment from the officials in this series?

By my calculations, the Habs have had 16 pps to Boston's 12 and there was also the issue of Subban getting away with pushing the net off it pegs.

Thornton's actions were childish and I wouldn't have an issue with a 1 game suspension, but let's not pretend that the Habs are somehow getting the short end of the stick when it comes to officiating...
