[Discussion] Busiest Trade Season in Years?

Recommended Posts

There has been a ton of GM movement this year... combining that with a rising salary cap and every team having money to spend, it seems like a recipe for a really big trade season.

Each new GM is going to want to make his mark on his team, presumably he is there because ownership wasn't happy with the roster that his predecessor gathered.

Here is a list of GM movement (may even be more by draft day):

What team with a new GM do you think makes a good trading partner with the Canucks? What players do you covet that could come our way?

Buffalo? Calgary? Carolina? Philly? Washington?

every team wants to move the players they don't want for something of valuable from another team...

no one wants to give up their good young players and prospects...

unless you find a new gm that is willing to give up their future for now, you want see many great trades...

hopefully linden and his gm aren't the ones doing that....

i could see pittsburgh giving up pouliot, sutter and a first for kesler.....

if someone will take edler for a good prospect, we would be lucky....

As of now. Nothing. I covet no player in the league over the age of 26 on this team. Any trade currently made will cost us our 1st this year, or the meager depth of prospects we have and that is something I am not comfortable with.

We need this years and next years draft where we hold ALL of our picks plus whatever other picks we might pick up. We then need to take stock of the prospects we have and start seriously developing them.

In 3 years I will feel much more comfortable knowing that the 2013 and 2015 draft are behind us and we can see what 2 of the strongest draft years in recent memory have net us in terms of future players.

You said it yourself, the cap is rising, GMs will be spending. We don't have the depth to spend. Cash for UFA's yes as always, but trade bait...not yet.

Give us 2-3 seasons before we start spending what meager depth of prospects we have where we actually know what kind of future NHL player we hold in our organization. In all honesty we in our almost 45 years in this league have done poorly trading our prospects and young players and watching them flourish elsewhere.

I would rather see Linden change this culture and for this organization to seriously start developing every aspect of our prospects.

As well...seriously Lou Lamerillo has been a GM since 87!!!!

Trades can also mean getting picks and prospects back...

Each organization is in a different state... I don't see us and Buffalo being great partners, because we both will likely want to gather young players and prospects. I think we are a little different in that we aren't in a complete rebuild mode, and can also bring back a veteran player as a return.

I see Washington being a good partner organizationally, because I think they are still looking to have success with their current core of players. Us trading veteran roster pieces, and getting prospects and young players back is a possibility.

I agree with this. With the exception of very unlikely superstars being traded here (Weber), I don't want us to get older players. We have to rebuild and give youth experience.

My dream target for this team that's plausable in a trade would be E Kane

For all of the desire I have for E. Kane in vancouver. I do not want to pay the potential asking price that the Jets will want. I have a feeling that E. Kane might just push himself out of Winnipeg in the near future if the percieved issues regarding his attitude or work ethic continue.

And if that is the case I think he could be had mid season 2014/2015 for a lot less than people think. a 2016 1st round pick + a prospect is possible IF the issues we hear about continue

Check out the Oilers. It's exactly what you seek.

I do think there will be a lot of trades this summer for the reason you mentioned, but I don't see the Canucks making a ton of them. I think we'll make 1 or 2 and sign 2 or 3 guys and that'll be it.

I think it is almost a certainty that at least one of our core guys is moved along with a couple of spare parts that will open up a roster spot or two for a young player.

Top possibilities in my mind in order of probability:

1. Kesler Gone.

2. Booth Gone

3. Hansen Gone

4. We sign a veteran goalie (Halak?)

5. Edler Gone

6. Tanev Gone

7. Burrows gone

I can easily see 3-4 of these things happening, which is a huge roster shift.
